The Kansas City Royals star delivered during the fifth inning of Wednesday's matchup with a game-sealing three-run homer.
Bobby Witt Jr. stunned the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night with a clutch, game-sealing three-run homer in the fifth to propel the Kansas City Royals to a 5-2 victory in front of the Kauffman-Stadium faithful.
With the win, the 26-year-old shortstop is now hitting .282 while recording an .814 OPS and launching 18 home runs this season.
Following the game, Witt Jr. shared his mindset as he entered the batter's box to face Arizona right-hander Michael Soroka.
"Yeah, it was huge, just kind of anytime you end the series with a win is a plus, have an off-day tomorrow and head to Boston," he said in a postgame interview. "I just wanted to be on time with the fastball and just be able to do some damage."
The Diamondbacks threatened early when Ildemaro Vargas drew a walk in the first and advanced to third base off a double by Geraldo Perdomo, but left-hander Daniel Lynch IV stood his ground to record two-straight outs.
As a result, John Rave put Kansas City ahead 1-0 in the second as he reached home off a costly throwing error by James McCann. Carter Jensen then got to Zac Gallen during the third with a solo shot to right-center field.
Arizona wasn't done yet in the next two innings as Nolan Arenado crushed a one-run blast to left field to prevent the shutout in the fourth while Ketel Marte drove in Jordan Lawlar with an RBI single during the fifth.
Michael Massey attempted to set up opportunities for insurance runs in the sixth with a single but Soroka fought back, fanning Nick Loftin and Rave while also inducing a flyout from Kyle Isbel.
The Royals failed to create any more traffic for the rest of the game, however, their bullpen proved effective in stranding Diamondback baserunners as they combined for only two walks issued.
While Kansas City would've loved to come away with a series win, they continued to show a ton of resiliency, having lost their previous two games against Arizona within two runs.
Besides Witt Jr., Jensen and Jac Caglianone have brought a major beacon of light to the Royals as the team's playoff chances are slim to none at this point in the season with them sitting nine games out of the final AL Wild Card spot.
Furthermore, veteran catcher Salvador Perez has made franchise history this season, surpassing George Brett's record of 317 career home runs.
As Caglianone works his way back to the lineup from a Grade 1 flexor strain and hopes to avoid a potential stint on the injured list, Witt Jr. will look to keep holding the fort during Kansas City's upcoming series against the Boston Red Sox starting on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. EDT.
