Verlander returns to Detroit to face the Diamondbacks. Can the Tigers build momentum against a struggling Arizona squad?

Kevin McGonigle is getting pitched around

The Detroit Tigers arrive in the Valley of the Sun with a 2-1 record and a chip on their shoulder, looking to build on a promising opening series in San Diego as they begin a three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks. For Detroit, this isn't just another early-season road trip — it's the continuation of a statement-making stretch before the club comes home to Comerica Park for its home opener on April 3 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Tigers won their first two games of the year, riding rookie Kevin McGonigle's four-hit debut and Tarik Skubal's dominant six innings in an 8-2 Opening Day victory over the Padres. McGonigle kept it going Friday night with a tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth, and Kenley Jansen struck out the side in the ninth for his 477th career save as Detroit took a 5-2 win. The Padres halted a potential sweep Saturday night, with Randy Vásquez combining with two relievers on a two-hitter in a 3-0 win over Detroit, dropping Jack Flaherty to 0-1.

As for Arizona, they arrive at their home opener in a very different mood. The Diamondbacks were swept in their opening three-game series by the Los Angeles Dodgers, with Will Smith delivering a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning of the finale to complete the sweep. The Diamondbacks finished the 2025 season at 80-82 and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year, making this home opener particularly important for a franchise trying to recapture relevance in the NL West.

Game 1 — Monday, March 30: Justin Verlander

The headline story of this entire series is who is taking the mound in the opener. Justin Verlander makes his first start in a Detroit Tigers uniform since August 30, 2017 — nearly nine years after his trade to the Houston Astros that marked the beginning of the club's long rebuild. On February 10, Verlander signed a one-year, $13 million contract to return to Detroit, joining a rotation that includes Tarik Skubal, Framber Valdez, Jack Flaherty, and Casey Mize.

Verlander is one of ten pitchers in history to record 3,500 career strikeouts and enters 2026 as the active leader in career wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched. His comeback story in San Francisco last season followed a familiar pattern of adversity and resurgence. After a brutal start that saw him go 0-8 with a 4.99 ERA through mid-July, Verlander turned it around dramatically — posting a 2.60 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP while striking out 70 batters in 72.2 innings over the final stretch.

In his final 13 starts of 2025, he averaged nearly six innings per outing and tossed back-to-back seven-inning performances in September. At 43 years old, nobody is expecting vintage Verlander, but the second half of last season suggested there is still plenty left in the tank.

In Spring Training, manager A.J. Hinch praised Verlander's command progress, noting his ability to spot his fastball to all quadrants of the plate and deploy an array of off-speed pitches with deception. The last time Verlander pitched in a Tigers uniform, he went six innings, allowed one run and struck out nine in a 6-2 victory. Tonight he gets to write the next chapter.

Game 2 — Tuesday, March 31: Casey Mize

Mize became a first-time All-Star in 2025, a genuine breakthrough season for a pitcher who had battled injuries and setbacks throughout the early part of his career. He made 28 regular-season starts with a 3.87 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and a 139-to-36 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 149 innings, doubling his previous career high with 14 wins.

He also contributed during the postseason, posting a 3.00 ERA across two games with seven strikeouts over six innings. Often overlooked on a staff that boasts multiple Cy Young winners, Mize quietly anchors the middle of a rotation that may be the best in baseball. His spring ERA sat at 3.24 across 8.1 innings heading into Opening Week, suggesting he's primed for another solid campaign. With free agency looming after 2026, Mize has every reason to put his best foot forward this season.

Game 3 — Wednesday, April 1: TBD

The Tigers have not yet announced a starter for the series finale. It is possible this slot falls to Jack Flaherty, who is looking to bounce back after a rough outing Saturday in San Diego when he was chased in the fifth inning. Either way, pitching matchups aside, the Tigers' bullpen is well-equipped with Kenley Jansen and Kyle Finnegan at the back end.

The Bottom Line

Arizona enters this series having been swept by the Dodgers in their opener, already looking up at the defending NL West powers. Detroit, meanwhile, arrives riding momentum and a rookie phenom in McGonigle who has electrified the early going. l.

First pitch Monday night at Chase Field is set for 10:10 p.m. ET.
