Amid trade deadline distractions, top prospect Max Clark shines in a historic debut as Detroit’s offensive explosion secures a dominant victory and a surging run differential.
It was a noisy day in Detroit with reports dropping left and right like blockbuster movie trailers.
Constant conversations and questions surrounded the Tigers clubhouse as reports surfaced that Detroit could be aggressive sellers ahead of the trade deadline. Casey Mize's next scheduled start was pushed back until after the deadline, fueling speculation that he could be on the move. Tarik Skubal may have already thrown his final pitch in a Tigers uniform this season, while veterans Kenley Jansen and Gleyber Torres have also been mentioned in trade rumors.
Despite all of the outside noise, the Tigers have continued to do their best to block out the distractions and focus on the games in front of them.
Friday was exactly the kind of performance they needed.
Detroit dominated the Oakland Athletics in a 13-1 victory that featured a first career hit, a first career home run and an offensive explosion that pushed the Tigers to 52-58 on the season. Even with the losing record, Detroit now owns a +50 run differential, the second-best mark in the American League.
Let's take a look at the Tigers' top three stars from the win, along with a few additional standout performances.
Third Star — Ben Malgeri
In an 11-1 game during the ninth inning, adding one more run usually isn't enough to earn a spot among the game's stars.
When it's your first Major League home run, however, that's a different story.
Malgeri finished the night 1-for-4 with a walk in five plate appearances.
Earlier in the game, he reached on a force out in the eighth inning before coming around to score Max Clark after a throwing error.
Then came the memorable moment.
In the ninth inning, Malgeri crushed his first career home run in The Show, and the excitement on his face said it all, regardless of the score.
He finished with two RBIs, scored twice, drove home Javier Báez with the homer and struck out once.
Second Star — Dillon Dingler
Dingler put the whipped cream on the sundae before Malgeri added the cherry on top.
With the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Dingler did what he does best: hit dingers.
The Tigers catcher launched his 23rd home run of the season, a no-doubt grand slam that completely put the game out of reach.
His second hit of the night gave Detroit a commanding 9-1 lead as he calmly rounded the bases.
Dingler later added another single, finishing 2-for-6 with one run scored, four RBIs and one massive grand slam.
First Star — Max Clark
If there were any nerves for Max Clark in his Major League debut, he certainly didn't show them.
Clark announced his arrival by drawing a four-pitch walk in his first career plate appearance during the second inning.
He picked up his first Major League hit in the fourth inning with a single to shallow left field before adding his first MLB RBI in the eighth. Clark ripped a double into left field to score Zach McKinstry, giving him both his first career extra-base hit and first RBI.
He wasn't finished there.
In the ninth inning, Clark ripped another double to left field, giving him his second double of both his career and the game.
By the end of his debut, Clark had put together an incredible 3-for-4 performance with two runs scored, one RBI, two doubles and five total bases while batting seventh in the lineup.
His offensive production, combined with several impressive defensive plays, showed exactly why so many believe Clark is one of the future faces of this organization. Pairing him with Kevin McGonigle for years to come could give Detroit one of the most exciting young duos in baseball.
Noteworthy Honorable Mentions
Kevin McGonigle: Hit a solo home run to tie the game in the third inning, his 10th home run of the season. He also added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to score Spencer Torkelson.
Javier Báez: Finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
Spencer Torkelson: Went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while adding a walk.
Pitching: It was a successful bullpen day for Detroit. Ty Madden earned his first win of the season after tossing three innings and allowing just two hits. Madden followed opener Tyler Holton, who got the start after Casey Mize's outing was pushed back and allowed just one run over two innings. Drew Sommers and Emmanuel De Jesus closed things out by combining for four scoreless innings, striking out four while not allowing a hit.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 52-58 on the season. They remain 6.5 games back in the division while moving to within 3.5 games of an American League Wild Card spot.
