Everyone is mad right now. I totally understand it. I’m not going to tell people they shouldn’t be mad. And we’re out for blood, looking for people to point fingers at. And when a team is struggling like the Tigers are, the truth is there’s enough blame to go around towards everyone. If you want to get mad at Scott Harris, you’re welcome to. If you feel like AJ Hinch is over-managing, you can point that out.
There are issues with the assembling of this roster. I talk all the time about how weak they are on defense. But at some point, you need to hold the players to a standard. This is a team that came in with expectations, and unless your name is Riley Greene or Kevin McGonigle (or Gage Workman for some reason), none of those players are living up to those expectations. No one is expecting superstars. No one is asking for this to be the best lineup in baseball. But even with all the injuries they’ve had, this is still a completely different record if this team had made about five basic plays through the first 40+ games of this season. I expected things from this team, but I sure as hell didn’t expect to be holding my breath every time our second baseman fields a weakly hit ground ball. It’s pathetic.
Unfortunately for us, Detroit does not have an off day tomorrow. They come back home to face the Toronto Blue Jays, and much like today, the pitching matchup isn’t favorable. Ty Madden will be making a start for Detroit. He’s been fine in his two outings since being recalled from AAA, but he’ll be facing Trey Yesavage, who is a beast for the Toronto Blue Jays. I don’t think I’m over exaggerating by saying that how the fan base feels about this team is entirely dependent on this upcoming home stand. They need to perform.
