You couldn’t have asked for a more perfect opening day. I would argue it was almost too perfect, uncharacteristically perfect. We never have weather like this on opening day. It was truly an anomaly, but a very welcome one. The weather may have been an anomaly, but hopefully the team’s performance wasn’t.
I know they won their first couple series, but the Cardinals are, for one of the first times in the franchise’s existence, actually in something of a rebuild. I haven’t heard of most of their players. I don’t know if that says more about me or about them, but it is strange considering the Cardinals were a model of consistency in Major League Baseball for so long. The bottom line is this is a series you should win, potentially even sweep, and today was a big first step towards that.
Detroit put up four runs today, which is more than enough to win with this dynamite pitching staff on the mound. Still, even if the first few innings were relatively fruitless, I felt like Detroit’s bats and swings today were much better than they were in their series against Arizona. Comerica Park is going to both giveth and taketh away sometimes. Riley Greene, Kevin McGongile, and several other Tigers had some great swings with little to show for it.
Detroit is back in action tomorrow with Jack Flaherty on the mound against Dustin May, not to be confused with Dusty May, who will be coaching a much more important game down in Indianapolis.
