MLB stars recognize Detroit’s rising duo as Dillon Dingler’s breakout power and Riley Greene’s consistent brilliance secure exclusive spots on the prestigious, player-voted Sporting News roster.

After votes from more than 260 MLB players, the results are in, and two Detroit Tigers have earned American League All-Star honors through The Sporting News.

Catcher extraordinaire Dillon Dingler and Tigers star Riley Greene were both selected by their fellow players for the publication’s American League All-Star team.

The Sporting News Awards date back to 1925 and remain a peer-based voting process. Players vote for player awards, while managers vote for manager awards.

Think of this as an All-Pro-style All-Star roster. There are no bench players or extra selections at each position simply to get more players on the list. Instead, these are the best players at each position in each league, as voted on by their peers.

That makes the accomplishment even more impressive.

Dillon Dingler Continues His Offensive Breakout

Dingler held his own all season long and led the Tigers in home runs (27) and RBIs (91). He finished second on the team in slugging percentage (.446) and third in both runs scored (72) and hits (134).

Although Dingler had a September to forget, his first five months of the season were astronomical. He entered the year with just 14 career home runs, including 13 in 2025. He then more than doubled his previous career total in the long-ball department, becoming one of the most trusted players in Detroit’s lineup and even entering MVP conversations.

His production throughout the season helped establish him as one of the American League’s top catchers, and his selection by fellow players is another testament to his breakout campaign.

Riley Greene Earns Recognition From His Peers

Greene was named to his third consecutive MLB All-Star Game this summer, yet he remains hitless in the Midsummer Classic, going 0-for-7 in his career.

The Tigers star outfielder may have an unorthodox style on the field, but he continues to dazzle night in and night out, whether with his glove or his bat.

Greene joins Randy Arozarena as one of the two outfielders selected to The Sporting News American League All-Star team. Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela are tied for the third and final outfield spot.

Greene’s selection shows just how much the rest of the league recognizes his talent, even if some members of the Detroit fan base have been hesitant to give him his flowers.

Appearing in 140 games, Greene hit 21 home runs and drove in 75 runs, finishing third on the Tigers in both categories. Although his power numbers regressed from last season, Greene focused more on making contact rather than simply hitting the ball hard, and it paid off. He led the team with 32 doubles.

Greene also finished with 79 runs scored and 143 hits, both good for second on the team.

Kevin McGonigle Misses Out on All-Star Selection

One notable name left off the All-Star team was Kevin McGonigle. Although McGonigle won The Sporting News American League Rookie of the Year award, he missed out on the top shortstop spot to Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals.

Even so, Detroit has plenty to be excited about moving forward.

The Tigers have a great foundation in place, and with a few additional pieces, they could ride the momentum of Dingler, Greene and McGonigle toward a World Series title.
