The great Magoo debate of 2026 has officially begun. It’s very nice to see Kevin McGonigle turning heads in spring training. I can’t say that I’m surprised. Some dudes were just meant to hit the baseball, and I’m starting to get the idea that Kevin McGonigle is one of those guys. I’m not going to go as far as to compare him to Juan Soto. A player like that only comes around once or twice a generation, but I think he’s similar in the sense that he has a God-given ability that very few people in the world are given.
I know we’ve gone through this experiment before and have been let down by some of our young prospects, but Kevin McGonigle is at a point where he can’t possibly fail as long as he remains healthy. It feels like he’s gotten better every single season he’s been in the minor leagues. It’s not just tiger fans and scouts that are reporting this stuff. Well-respected opinions from major outlets are calling this guy the best overall hitter in the minor leagues. If what we’ve seen in spring is any indication, there’s a chance he’s one of the best overall hitters in the Tigers lineup as well.
I didn’t expect to talk about this so early in spring training, but the fire has started to rise. Is there any way that Kevin McGonigle doesn’t make the team out of camp? Oh yeah, there’s definitely a way. I talk about it in the video. I really think that Detroit is going to hammer home the idea that they want to give him more reps defensively at shortstop in the minor leagues. Do I think that’s a cop out? Yeah, kind of. If this were 2021 and this were still a really young team that wasn’t playing for much, I could understand it, but you have to give them credit for putting the chips into the center of the table and making an attempt to put the best product on the field in 2026. To me, that product includes Kevin McGonigle.
As excited as we are about what this pitching staff has to offer, the biggest question mark for this team remains the offense, and the Tigers don’t really have many players like McGonigle in their lineup. That’s not to say that I expect him to get called up and have a 1.000 OPS from day one, but this is an organization that desperately needs more contact and desperately needs more guys who have an elite feel for the strike zone. Even at his worst, McGonigal will match that. There’s a value that he can bring even if he’s just a bottom-of-the-roster guy to start his career.
This is what I wanted from Magoo this spring. I wanted him to put the pressure on the organization. If they’re going to keep him down, I want the fans to be upset about it. The last thing I wanted was for him to have a disappointing spring, where we all just had to accept that he still needed some time to marinate down in the minor leagues. We have a lot of baseball left to play before we get to Opening Day, but there’s something to be said about a guy who is very clearly unafraid of the moment. Tiger fans are going to continue to clamor for him.
