While Detroit stumbles, their Double-A affiliate secures a fifth straight championship berth. A dramatic three-run blast fueled the comeback, proving the Tigers’ winning culture thrives in Erie.
Thursday night did not provide much for Detroit Tigers fans to enjoy at the major league level. The Tigers lost 3-1 to the Chicago White Sox, with Munetaka Murakami's three-run homer in the first inning accounting for all of Chicago's scoring. While Detroit struggled to generate enough offense to answer, the organization's Double-A affiliate provided a much different result a few states away.
The Erie SeaWolves defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-3 to advance to the Eastern League Championship Series for the fifth consecutive season. It is an impressive run for a level of the minor leagues where rosters are constantly changing because of promotions, trades and organizational movement. Erie won championships in 2023 and 2024 before falling to Binghamton in last year's championship series, and now another collection of Tigers prospects has an opportunity to bring home a title.
Richmond took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning on Kaeden Kent's three-run home run, while Erie's offense had trouble getting much going through the first five innings. That changed in the sixth after Seth Stephenson reached on an infield single and Zyhir Hope drew a walk. Thayron Liranzo then tied the game with a three-run home run to left-center field.
Erie did not stop there. Chris Meyers doubled, Luke Shliger and Izaac Pacheco eventually walked to load the bases, and Meyers scored on a passed ball to give Erie a 4-3 lead. Stephenson created another run in the seventh by drawing a walk, stealing second and moving to third on a wild pitch before Hope brought him home with a sacrifice fly.
Kenny Serwa did his part to give Erie enough time to come back. After allowing Kent's home run, Serwa retired the next seven hitters and worked seven innings before turning the game over to Tanner Kohlhepp and Moises Rodriguez. Rodriguez worked around an error and a walk in the ninth to finish the 5-3 victory.The historical part of this run is worth mentioning. Erie has now reached the championship series five years in a row. The Tigers' old Double-A affiliate in Montgomery won Southern League championships in 1972, 1973 and three straight from 1975-77. The London Tigers later won the Eastern League championship in 1990, followed by Erie's championships in 2023 and 2024. That gives Tigers Double-A affiliates eight league championships since 1970, with Erie now getting a chance to add a ninth.
Winning championships in the minor leagues is not the same thing as producing major league players, and it does not guarantee that Hope, Liranzo, Peyton Graham or anyone else on this roster will become a regular in Detroit. Development still has to be judged individually, especially when players reach Double-A and begin facing more advanced pitching and hitters.
But there is something to be said for repeatedly putting prospects into meaningful games in September. Liranzo came to the plate with Erie down three runs and changed the game with one swing. Hope contributed without recording a hit by drawing a walk ahead of Liranzo's homer and later driving in an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.
The names in Erie have changed considerably since the SeaWolves began this run in 2022. The results have not changed nearly as much.
On a night when the Tigers did not give fans much to talk about offensively, their Double-A affiliate gave us something else to watch. Erie is playing for another championship, and at this point, getting to this stage has become less of an occasional accomplishment and more of an organizational habit.
