One of Detroit’s hottest young prospects is going to be on the shelf for a while. The current Tigers farmhand, who is currently ranked as the fourth-best prospect in the Detroit system, had surgery this week to repair a tendon in his wrist. Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press is reporting this, and he says there is currently no timetable for his return. Josue broke out in the 2024 Arizona fall league, where he became the first player in the 32-year history of that league to win the triple crown. He had a tremendous year in the minors a year ago, putting up an .883 OPS last season across two leagues as a catcher, first baseman, and designated hitter. He was expected to be called up to Detroit at some point this year during his age-21 season.
Obviously, people are going to wonder what this means for Briceno's development and whether it delays his future call-up to the major leagues. The answer is yes, this delays things quite a bit. Wrist injuries are among those that tend to linger for a while. I’ve always felt that Briceno's long-term calling was probably at the first base and/or designated hitter positions. I think his bat is the most appealing part of his game, and I could see him having a very similar life in the big leagues to what Victor Martinez had for a long time. I don’t know if Josue is going to end up being the prolific hitter that Victor was, but Victor spent a good chunk of his career at catcher before moving to first base and ultimately DH for the latter part of his career. Injuries played a big role in that.
This isn’t something that necessarily changes the way I feel about Briceño as a player. I’m not as high on him as I am some other prospects in the system, but I do think that he has potential to be a really good long-term DH. This wrist injury doesn’t change that; it just delays the inevitable call-up. As much as we want to see these guys here for opening day, I can promise you that all three of the youngsters we saw in spring training right now are going to play a key part in the Tigers' success in 2026. It won’t be on opening day, and for Josue, it might not be for a couple more months because of the injury, but they will contribute; we’ll have to wait a little bit longer.
