After two disappointing home losses, the White Sox face elimination in Cleveland. But their remarkable 2026 season has earned them the benefit of the doubt.

The Chicago White Sox returned home to Rate Field this week with an opportunity to clinch a postseason series in front of their home crowd for the first time in 120 years.

White Sox fans have been waiting to experience a moment like that in person, and two sellout crowds with rowdy atmospheres showed as much.

Unfortunately, the team didn't come through. Chicago's pitching struggled in both games, leading to defeats in Games 3 and 4 of the ALDS. Now, the series heads back to Cleveland for a decisive Game 5, with the Guardians holding all the momentum.

Let's be honest about things...That's deflating. The White Sox went from being one win away from the ALCS to facing elimination at the hands of a division rival that has been their "boogeyman" all year long.

Chicago already squandered its division lead in September, allowing Cleveland to become AL Central champions. Blowing a 2-0 ALDS lead to the Guardians in the first-ever postseason matchup between these two teams would be an incredibly tough pill to swallow.

And for good reason, I think many White Sox fans are dreading what might happen in Cleveland for Game 5. Gavin Williams will be back on the mound for the Guardians after striking out 11 White Sox batters in Game 2.

But I'm here to tell you the opposite. This White Sox team deserves the benefit of the doubt from its fans.

Nobody thought Chicago would be here before the season. At every step along the way in 2026, there have been reasons to doubt this team.

Many of those doubts have been fair, including questions about whether the White Sox have enough pitching and the underwhelming nature of the team's trade deadline acquisitions.

Yet every time the world gets down on this team, the White Sox seem to find a little bit of magic. They find a way to answer the call.

What the White Sox are doing in 2026 isn't logical. It defies the expectations of analysts, fans and even the team's own front office. But here they are, and two losses at home don't actually change the situation for the White Sox. They still remain one win away from the ALCS.

They have Sean Burke, their most reliable starting pitcher, on the mound with full rest, ready to go in Cleveland on Saturday night.

With nine strong innings and one more victory, the frustrations of these last two home losses will be behind them. The White Sox will keep dancing and guarantee themselves more home playoff games.

Once the final out is recorded, there will be plenty of time to lick our wounds and reflect on some of the moves made during this season. There will be time to chart a course for the future. But for now, this White Sox team is going to leave it all on the field. And they've earned the benefit of the doubt from fans that they'll find a way to pull through once again.

The decisive Game 5 between the White Sox and Guardians is scheduled for first pitch around 7 p.m. CT on Saturday night at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
