The White Sox took down the American League’s best team on the road and will enter the MLB trade deadline with plenty of momentum.

After salvaging a series split with the New York Yankees earlier in the week, the Chicago White Sox will now enter the MLB trade deadline on the heels of a statement victory. Chicago opened the month of August with a series win over the Tampa Bay Rays, beating the best team in the American League in impressive fashion.

Even more striking is the fact that Chicago did it on the road. Entering the weekend series, the Rays had a 40-16 record at home. Tropicana Field has quickly become the hardest place in baseball to play, but this White Sox team was unfazed, as usual.

With neither Sean Burke nor Davis Martin taking the mound, White Sox starting pitchers Erick Fedde, Noah Schultz, and Anthony Kay combined to throw 16.1 innings of two-run baseball. The power bats carried them the rest of the way, with four home runs on Friday night and three more in Sunday's rubber match, leading to a statement 9-1 victory.

That's a really positive sign for the White Sox moving forward. It's been clear for months that this team needed to add starting pitching. That's the key to sustaining its early success. Chicago swung a trade for Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night and could still be in the market for more pitching. But over the weekend, we got a taste of what this team is capable of when the starting rotation keeps it in the ballgame.

Anthony Kay, in particular, is deserving of some flowers. While he's received some harsh criticism during the 2026 season, Kay's 6.1 scoreless innings on Sunday afternoon improved his record for the year to 8-5 and lowered his ERA to 4.01.

Dating back to the start of May, Kay has a 3.39 ERA over 85 innings. In his 17 outings during that span, the White Sox are also 10-7. He gives them a chance to win almost every time he takes the mound. That's about all you can ask for from a middle-rotation arm.

Andrew Benintendi was another standout performer for Chicago over the weekend. He went 3-for-9 at the plate with two home runs, and both blasts set the tone early for the White Sox offense. Everson Pereira also started to find his swing on Sunday afternoon, recording a two-run double and a two-run home run.

Pending the results of games involving the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Guardians, the Chicago White Sox will hold either a 3.0 or 3.5-game lead heading into Monday's MLB trade deadline. They can now enjoy a day of rest as they travel to Boston and prepare for another important six-game stretch. That begins with three games against the Red Sox, a team that recently swept Chicago at Rate Field, before the White Sox return home for three games against the Cleveland Guardians.

At 59-52, though, the White Sox continue to answer the bell and have earned the right to be buyers at the MLB trade deadline. More help should be coming to the roster within the next 24 hours. Combined with the team's performance over the weekend, there's a lot for White Sox fans to be excited about right now.
