The St. Louis Cardinals claimed Everson Pereira off waivers after the Chicago White Sox designated the promising 25-year-old outfielder for assignment.
After acquiring outfielder Brenton Doyle in a deal with the Colorado Rockies at the MLB trade deadline, the Chicago White Sox made the bold decision in the ensuing hours to designate outfielder Everson Pereira for assignment.
Pereira, 25, had not been Chicago's most consistent hitter in 2026, and a big part of that was probably his three different stints on the IL. But he did flash the occasional pop that made him an attractive acquisition for the White Sox last winter. In 27 games for Chicago this season, Pereira had four home runs, 11 RBIs, and a .722 OPS.
For a 25-year-old with clear upside, there was a decent argument to be made that Pereira was worth keeping around. He has years of club control remaining and a clear ceiling that could make him a valuable piece of a contending team. But the White Sox clearly valued Doyle and his elite defense in center field more.
On a rebuilding club in 2023, 2024, or 2025, the White Sox likely would have given Pereira an extended look at the MLB level and an opportunity to develop. Rebuilding clubs are focused more on long-term development than immediate wins and losses. But with Chicago in first place in the AL Central and having a legitimate opportunity to win the division, immediate value takes precedence.
Perhaps there was also some belief that the White Sox might be able to slip Pereira through waivers. Chicago placed veteran outfielder Austin Hays on release waivers, and other veteran bats such as Jorge Soler could also find themselves available. There is a chance that part of the calculation from the White Sox's perspective was the belief that Pereira could sneak through waivers and make it to the minor leagues without compromising the organization's outfield depth.
That did not manifest into reality. On Thursday afternoon, Pereira was claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals.
St. Louis, much like the White Sox, overachieved at the beginning of 2026. But struggles over the last month and a much more difficult landscape in the National League have left the Cardinals at 57-58 and 4.0 games out of a wild-card spot. They sold some of their MLB assets at the trade deadline and are now in a better position to bet on the long-term potential of a player like Pereira.
They also have a much thinner outfield, especially after Lars Nootbaar was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Pereira has an opportunity in St. Louis to receive regular at-bats and potentially become a long-term starter.
As much as White Sox fans may want to wish Everson Pereira the best in his new endeavors, seeing him thrive with St. Louis after being voluntarily let go by Chicago would be a difficult pill to swallow. But it is now official that he has departed the organization, and the White Sox will have to live with that decision, for better or worse.
