The Chicago White Sox announced a series of offseason roster moves on Monday afternoon.
Outfielders Dominic Fletcher and Corey Julks, along with pitchers Elvis Peguero and Owen White, were outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte.
By outrighting those players, the White Sox cleared space on the 40-man roster — space that will be necessary if Chicago plans to be active in free agency and, maybe more importantly, to protect young players who would otherwise be exposed to the Rule 5 Draft.
If a player is drafted out of high school and spends five years in the minors—or comes out of college and logs four years of service—and they still aren’t added to the 40-man roster before the offseason deadline, they become eligible to be scooped up in the Rule 5 Draft.
Keep an eye on minor league arms like Payton Pallette, Tanner McDougal, and Shane Murphy to be added to the 40-man at some point over the next month.
The deadline to protect eligible players from the Rule 5 Draft is on November 19, 2025.
In the shuffle, Chicago also lost a bit of outfield depth. Will Robertson, who made his MLB debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2025 before landing with the White Sox, was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Robertson without question earned his shot in the big leagues. Across his time in the Blue Jays and White Sox systems, he posted a .958 OPS with 20 home runs at Triple-A. But that production never carried over to the big leagues.
The 27-year-old went just 8-for-63 in a White Sox uniform — good for a .133 batting average and a .309 OPS while playing in 24 games.
Analytics always liked Robertson’s offensive profile dating back to his minor league days. But as White Sox fans have seen time and time again — most recently with someone like first baseman Tim Elko — some guys just can’t translate that success against major league pitching.
Maybe it’s for the best.
The White Sox are trying to take another step toward contention in 2026. They won't have room for reclamation projects on the Opening Day roster anymore. Depth is always useful, but I don't think anyone was expecting Robertson to be a key contributor for the Sox next year after what he showed in 2025.
It’s good to see Robertson land with an organization where he might actually have a chance to make the team. That opportunity wasn’t going to come in Chicago next season.
After the recent transactions, the White Sox 40-man roster sits at 35.
