After a 24-win improvement and a return to the postseason, the White Sox are prioritizing continuity by bringing back Will Venable's entire coaching staff for 2027.
Following the 2025 season, the Chicago White Sox experienced significant turnover on their coaching staff. Key changes were made at pitching coach, hitting coach, and several other assistant coaching positions.
One of the biggest storylines surrounding Chicago entering 2026 was its revamped coaching staff and how the organization, for the first time in a long time, gave its manager the opportunity to build his own staff.
Will Venable had significant control throughout the hiring process last winter, bringing in Zach Bove as pitching coach, Derek Shomon as hitting coach, and other new faces to the organization, including former MLB outfielder Chris Denorfia, who joined the staff as major league field coordinator.
The results spoke for themselves. The White Sox improved by 24 wins, going from 60-102 in 2025 to 84-78 in 2026, and made their first postseason appearance since 2021.
It should come as no surprise, then, that as the White Sox begin planning for 2027, GM Chris Getz has already announced that the entire coaching staff will be retained and offered contracts to return next season.
While it’s easy to nitpick Venable and his coaching staff for some of the weaknesses this team displayed throughout the season, that shouldn’t take away from the bigger picture or the reality of a 24-win improvement.
One thing the White Sox certainly had working in their favor throughout the entire season was their culture. They established a winning environment in the clubhouse, built a roster of players who genuinely loved playing for one another, and assembled a coaching staff that allowed individual personalities to shine.
That’s an important step in any rebuild, and it’s something that will help the White Sox continue building a positive reputation moving forward.
The young core that emerged in 2026 will return in 2027 knowing that the manager is the same, the coaching staff is the same, the messaging is the same, and the culture is the same. That type of consistency is valuable for a developing group looking to take another step forward.
It wouldn’t be advisable for the White Sox to bring back the exact same roster and simply hope for continued improvement. There are clear weaknesses that need to be addressed, and the front office can’t afford to become complacent after one successful season.
But there’s a difference between maintaining continuity in the clubhouse and standing pat with the roster. Coaching stability can be a significant advantage for a young team, especially when the staff has already demonstrated its ability to get results.
After everything the White Sox accomplished in 2026, bringing back Venable and his entire coaching staff is an obvious decision, and the right one.
