With MLB free agency officially opening, the White Sox are being linked to one of the top starting pitchers on the market in a move that could transform their rotation for 2027 and beyond.
Later today at 4 p.m. Central Time, free agents will officially be eligible to sign with new teams, and the Chicago White Sox should be one of the more active organizations across the league.
There's already plenty of speculation about who the White Sox could be targeting. GM Chris Getz has emphasized the need to improve the outfield, but he hasn't shied away from the most obvious need on the roster: starting pitching.
There should be a few frontline arms for the White Sox to pursue, and in the days leading up to free agency, Chicago has been named an ideal fit for former Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta.
ESPN's David Schoenfield recently highlighted the best fits for the top free agents on the market, naming the White Sox as the best landing spot for Peralta.
After posting a 3.25 ERA in 10 starts following his trade to the Rays at the deadline, then delivering a strong postseason en route to an American League pennant, Peralta did plenty to raise his stock and show teams that he can still be the frontline arm he once was in Milwaukee.
The only real concern the White Sox should have about acquiring Peralta is his home run rate. Peralta is a little home run prone, which doesn't pair particularly well with Rate Field. But that doesn't mean he can't be effective in a White Sox uniform.
Peralta's home run rate wasn't far off from Sean Burke's, who broke out in 2026 with an 11-7 record and a 3.34 ERA, looking like a frontline starter in his own right. The White Sox just need another pitcher to pair with Burke, and Peralta's reliability and consistency to throw at least 165 innings in each of the last four seasons show why Chicago could be the right place for him.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com agreed. He listed the White Sox as a potential suitor for Peralta in his free agency preview, mentioning how Chicago needs frontline pitching but may not be ready to jump into the sweepstakes for someone like Tarik Skubal.
I don't put much stock into the Skubal connection with the White Sox, but I do expect Chicago to be involved in that next tier of free-agent starting pitchers, looking at arms like Freddy Peralta and Michael King.
The upside is probably greater with Peralta, a 30-year-old who was a legitimate Cy Young contender in 2025, while King could be the safer and more reliable option.
Spotrac's current market value projection has Peralta landing a seven-year deal worth approximately $200 million, which I believe could actually be underselling him a bit. The real question for the White Sox will be whether they're comfortable handing out a long-term contract of that magnitude.
When you combine the immediate impact, future upside, and all-around roster fit, there may not be a better free agent on the market for the White Sox to pursue than Freddy Peralta.
It would be a major splash on a contract that sets a new franchise record, and a deal that sends a clear message about the organization's expectations of competing for an American League pennant in 2027 and beyond.
