Caleb Bonemer, the top ranked prospect in the Chicago White Sox organization, is headed to Double-A Birmingham after a dominant start to the 2026 season.
The Chicago White Sox have already had 12 different players make their MLB debuts this season.
It's the contributions from these young players that have made the 2026 season such a treat to watch. And if there's one reason for optimism about the White Sox moving forward, it's the fact that there's still more help on the way.
The White Sox have a very deep and talented farm system, and the highest-rated prospect in the organization just got one step closer to the big leagues on Sunday.
The White Sox are promoting 20-year-old infielder Caleb Bonemer to Double-A Birmingham, a well-earned promotion for the No. 1 prospect in Chicago's farm system and the No. 13 prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB Pipeline.
Bonemer took professional baseball by storm when he posted a .874 OPS with 30 doubles across 107 games in his first professional season. That included 96 games with Low-A Kannapolis before a late-season promotion to High-A Winston-Salem. Bonemer was even better for the Dash after being bumped up than he was in Kannapolis, and it became apparent very early on that the former second-round pick, selected 43rd overall by the White Sox in the 2024 MLB Draft, had superstar potential.
Some outlets believed Caleb Bonemer could find himself ranked as a top-10 prospect in baseball by the end of 2026, but that rise came sooner than expected given how he exploded out of the gate with Winston-Salem this season.
The most significant development in Bonemer's game this year has been the power. In 61 games for the Dash, he has 15 doubles, 18 home runs, and a .937 OPS.
In 168 career professional games to this point, Bonemer has 45 doubles, 30 home runs, 107 RBIs, and 39 stolen bases.
Now Bonemer gets another serious test and begins a new chapter of his career as he joins the Barons. Should he continue some of his success at the Double-A level, the sky will truly be the limit for how Bonemer gets evaluated on a national scale. It would also set him up nicely to make his MLB debut at some point in 2027.
Bonemer will turn 21 in October and be 21 for the entirety of the 2027 season, but in the modern game, that's not an outrageous age to debut and contribute at the major league level. Outfielder Braden Montgomery started the 2026 season in Double-A Birmingham before earning his way to the big leagues by June and immediately helping the White Sox win games.
I'd expect Chicago to let Bonemer finish out 2026 in Birmingham, then start him in Triple-A Charlotte next year on a fast track to the big league roster. Where he will play remains to be seen. The White Sox certainly don't have a shortage of infielders, and they'll probably be adding another one with the number one overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. But when you can hit like Caleb Bonemer can, you begin forcing the issue and demanding at-bats.
This is a really exciting update for White Sox fans and a very deserved promotion for Bonemer.
