Success at home has become one of the biggest reasons the Chicago White Sox find themselves in first place entering the middle of June.
Just in case the 2026 Chicago White Sox weren't fun enough, there's an added layer of excitement surrounding this team because of how well they've played at home this season.
The White Sox are currently 37-31, which is good for sole possession of first place in the AL Central, but a lot of the buzz around the team right now, especially on the streets of Chicago, is due to the fact that the Sox are 19-3 over their last 22 home games.
The White Sox are 23-11 at home this season, but they've struggled a bit more on the road, posting a 14-20 record away from Rate Field.
And truthfully, it all comes back to the pitching.
The pitching staff was my main concern about the White Sox before the 2026 season. It's still my main concern today. When the White Sox have gotten quality performances from their starting staff, they've gone on hot streaks and been one of the best teams in baseball. It's pretty clear by now that the offense is going to hold its own. The question remains whether the pitching can keep them in ballgames and whether the staff has enough innings in the tank to get through a full 162-game season.
As the pitching goes, the White Sox go, so it shouldn't be a shock that the team ERA at home is 3.29 this season, which is the fourth-best mark in baseball. Chicago's team ERA on the road is 5.30, which ranks as the third worst in baseball. That's a pretty stark contrast.
Anthony Kay is a prime example. He's 5-0 with a 3.08 ERA at home and 1-1 with a 6.04 ERA on the road.
And of course, playing this well at home has a bit of a domino effect. The more games the White Sox win in front of the crowd in Chicago, the more fans show up to the ballpark and bring the energy. That energy only fuels the White Sox every time they take the field, and it's something that's been noticed by opposing teams.
Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong got into a verbal confrontation with a White Sox fan in the rubber match of the Crosstown Classic back in May. PCA then gave the White Sox a ton of credit for being a well-rounded baseball team and gave the fans credit for the environment they create on the South Side.
Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner recently admitted how games against the White Sox feel more intense and hostile than games against NL Central rivals like the St. Louis Cardinals.
On Friday night, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts took note of the impressive atmosphere.
“I remember a few years back it was empty and there was a lot of dismay here on the South Side. Now there’s a lot of energy and excitement. They’re in first place. It’s a young, tough, athletic team,” said Roberts.
Every playoff team has a superpower, and for the White Sox, it's been their ability to come from behind and the home-field advantage they enjoy playing at Rate Field. If the White Sox can continue to play good baseball at home, it raises the floor for this team the rest of the way and should keep them in the playoff race deep into the 2026 season.
