Miguel Vargas made franchise history while showcasing his complete skill set in a crucial Chicago White Sox victory on Saturday.
If you've paid even a morsel of attention to the Chicago White Sox in 2026, you probably recognize the fantastic season third baseman Miguel Vargas is putting together.
Vargas was selected to the American League All-Star team and represented the White Sox well by hitting a home run in the game.
His 5.0 fWAR ranks among the top 20 players in all of baseball, and for most of the 2026 season, it has been the best mark of any third baseman.
Vargas is a central figure in the White Sox lineup. Yes, he's part of that unique White Sox power trio, with Vargas, Munetaka Murakami and Colson Montgomery each surpassing 30 home runs for the first time since 2006. But while Murakami and Montgomery have endured stretches where they've struggled to contribute offensively, Vargas has been the stabilizing presence all year long.
He probably doesn't receive enough credit for his improved defense at third base or his tremendous baserunning, either. But all of it was on display for the White Sox on Saturday afternoon.
The White Sox took on the Detroit Tigers in a matinee matchup after the game's start time was moved up. Vargas proceeded to do a little bit of everything.
His stolen base helped produce a run in the bottom of the first inning. He made an incredible defensive play in the fourth, saving a run and keeping Detroit off the board. Then, with the White Sox searching for some breathing room, Vargas launched a solo home run, his 33rd of the season, to provide an important insurance run.
The most important result was a 3-1 White Sox victory, but Vargas also took care of some personal history in the process.
With his performance, Vargas became the first player in Chicago White Sox history to record 30 home runs, 30 doubles, 100 runs scored and 20 stolen bases in a single season.
It's the type of complete, all-around production the White Sox have never seen before on the South Side.
Things haven't always been pretty for the White Sox this year. That's especially true over the last few weeks. But regardless of how the regular season ends or where Chicago ultimately lands in the AL Central and postseason races, it's worth taking some time to appreciate everything Miguel Vargas has brought to this team, how far he's come as a player and how bright his future remains in the Windy City.
