And for the 2026 White Sox, that player is left handed pitcher Sean Newcomb.
Newcomb signed a one year, $4.5 million contract with the White Sox during the offseason. When the team arrived at Camelback Ranch for spring training, he had his sights set on being a starting pitcher.
Chicago gave Newcomb, along with a dozen other arms, an equal opportunity to earn a rotation spot in camp. Despite his desire to start, though, the White Sox ultimately settled on keeping Newcomb in the bullpen.
As the season has progressed, his role for the White Sox has evolved. Newcomb has served as an opener, a long relief arm, and even a high leverage reliever in several save situations. He has delivered in each role.
Saturday afternoon marked Newcomb’s 50th appearance of the 2026 season, and after dealing three scoreless innings in Minnesota, he now owns a 2.19 ERA over 78 innings pitched.
He has not allowed an earned run over his last 20.1 innings, a streak that dates back more than a month to July 30. Each of Newcomb’s last five outings has lasted at least two innings, and he has now pitched three innings in consecutive appearances.
As the White Sox search for innings to bail out the starting rotation and preserve a taxed bullpen down the stretch of the regular season, Newcomb has been stretched out and continues to deliver. Without him, Chicago’s other top relief arms would be more worn down and less effective. His versatility and consistency have been among the most valuable assets available to manager Will Venable this season, and they are not being discussed nearly enough.
His 1.8 fWAR ranks ninth on the team. Frankly, it’s hard to remember a more productive one year free agent signing the White Sox have made.
