New York Yankees infielder Anthony Volpe opened up on his stint in the minor leagues before his return this week.
The New York Yankees will be finishing their three-game series with the Colorado Rockies tonight. While the games haven't been the most competitive, it has been an eventful few days for New York.
Starting off, the Yankees activated star outfielder Aaron Judge from a long stint on the injured list. Judge coming back should help the team's offense take off, but the Yankees also lost another All-Star this week.
Outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. went on the injured list due to a right thumb sprain. Chisholm is trying to get back before the regular season ends, but that remains to be seen.
And now, the team has recalled infielder Anthony Volpe from Triple-A. It has been over a month since the Yankees demoted Volpe to the minor leagues, but he is now back after a successful tenure in Triple-A.
But before he makes his return, Volpe did open up about the demotion. The infielder got honest about how he felt going down to Triple-A, saying he felt like he was in a bubble playing there.
“I wanted to get a lot out of it,” Volpe said. “You have a game every night to try out different stuff and feel what works. You feel like it’s going to translate in case an opportunity like this comes. So there was just a lot of trial and error.”
Volpe played in 56 games for the Yankees this season, hitting .240 with one home run and 19 RBIs, posting an OPS of .646. His stint in the major leagues this year wasn't the best, but there is hope that he can return to form after going down.
In Triple-A, he has hit .266 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs, while posting an OPS of .868. His numbers in the minors reflect a completely different player, but the Yankees believe that he can carry this over to the big leagues.
New York is going to need Volpe to play much better this time around, especially with Chisholm out of the lineup. Volpe could be a key piece to this group down the stretch, but he will have to earn his ability to stay in the major leagues.
The Yankees are vying for playoff positioning right now, with every game being a little more important as time going on. There are only a few weeks left in the regular season, and New York is trying to play the best it can before the playoffs start.
