The New York Yankees have made a big move involving top prospect George Lombard Jr.
The New York Yankees are calling up their top prospect George Lombard Jr. to the big leagues after the trade deadline.
Lombard will join the 40-man roster as they have an open spot. New York is also optioning shortstop Anthony Volpe as well as Jasson Dominguez and Angel Chivilli.
With Volpe being sent down to Triple-A, it clears a spot for Lombard to start for the Yankees. Lombard has played at a high level in Double-A and Triple-A in the 2026 season.
In 20 games in Double-A, the 21-year-old is slashing .312/.400/.571 with four home runs, eight doubles, 10 RBIs, 18 runs, and a .971 OPS. He has also performed well in Triple-A across 56 games, slashing .268/.405/.440 with six home runs, 16 doubles, 21 RBIs, 44 runs, and an .845 OPS.
He could play a key role for New York down the stretch as they look to make it back to the World Series. The Yankees made it there in the 2024 season, but fell to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS in the 2025 season.
USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConnectIf Lombard can hit how he has in the minor leagues, it will be a major boost for New York's lineup. Volpe had struggled as the starting shortstop, slashing .240/.325/.322 with one home run, nine doubles, 19 RBIs, 20 runs, and a .646 OPS.
Lombard was subject to some trade rumors ahead of the deadline as a valuable Yankees prospect, but he will now become a vital part of their lineup.
At the deadline, New York was aggressive in adding talent as they acquired Luis García Jr. and outfielder Heliot Ramos. Garcia is having a great 2026 season, slashing .283/.313/.560 with 23 home runs, 20 doubles, 76 RBIs, 48 runs, and an .873 OPS.
Ramos is also having a solid season, as he's slashing .264/.304/.423 with nine home runs, 13 doubles, 34 RBIs, 36 runs, and a .728 OPS.
With the added bats of Garcia and Ramos, as well as a talented prospect in Lombard coming up, the Yankees have some promise as they look to make a deep playoff run.
