KNOXVILLE, Iowa and RICHMOND, Va. -- Kyle Larson's most successful "Double" attempt came on a day where the schedule called for it to not even be possible.
Just four-and-a-half hours after finishing a 400-lap NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway in Virginia, Kyle Larson was in Knoxville, Iowa to take the checkered flag in the Knoxville Nationals -- sprint car racing's most prestigious event.
How did Kyle Larson pull this off?
- 7:15 p.m. ET: The NASCAR Cup Series race started at Richmond Raceway.
The race started an hour and 45 minutes before racing in the Knoxville Nationals was supposed to start, at 9 p.m. ET. Once they finished the D-Main, C-Main and B-Main races and made it to the A-Main feature Larson was set to race in, it was going to be tight.
However, in contrast to a more infamous Double attempt in 2024, Larson caught a break from Mother Nature: Rain in Knoxville delayed the start of the races.
- 10:15 p.m. ET: The NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond ends.
Kyle Larson jumped from his No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet in Richmond, Virginia, to board a plane bound for the Pella Municipal Airport in Iowa.
- 10:57 p.m. ET: Larson lifts off for Iowa.
- 12:07 a.m. ET: The races start at Knoxville Speedway.
- 12:55 a.m. ET: Larson lands in Iowa
About a half hour after Larson landed at the airport, he arrived at Knoxville Speedway. Then, about 42 minutes later, he was racing in the A-main.
- 2:07 a.m. ET: Larson's A-main race starts with him on the pole.
- 2:38 a.m. ET: Larson wins.
The rain finally worked out right for him Saturday night. Had rain not delayed Knoxville's racing by three hours, Larson would've been in the air when the A-main race was going on.
Leading flag-to-flag in the A-main, Larson won the Knoxville Nationals for the fourth time. He's now tied with Kenny Weld and Danny Lasoski for fourth on the Knoxville Nationals' all-time wins list, behind only Steve Kinser (12 wins) and Donny Schatz (11 wins).
Had a situation like 2024 happened, when rain delayed the Indianapolis 500 late enough to have him miss the start of the Coca-Cola 600, Larson wouldn't have made that history.
Who did Kyle Larson beat in the Knoxville Nationals?
Larson beat eight-time 2026 World of Outlaws winner Sheldon Haudenschild and beloved, retired NASCAR Cup Series driver Kasey Kahne for the win. He led every lap in the A-main from the pole and beat Haudenschild by 1.528 seconds and Kahne by 3.344 seconds.
David Gravel, who leads the World of Outlaws sprint car points standings and is tied for the most wins this season (10), finished sixth. He started 10th in the A-main. Buddy Kofoid, who sits second to Gravel in the standings with the same amount of wins, finished just behind Gravel in the A-main after starting fifth.
Other notables included NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series driver Corey Day (14th in the A-main feature) and former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Rico Abreu (17th).
Finishing ninth in the C-main was 11-time Knoxville Nationals winner and Fargo, North Dakota, resident Donny Schatz.
