Legacy Motor Club confirmed John Hunter Nemechek is out at their NASCAR Cup Series organization in 2027.
STATESVILLE, N.C. -- Legacy Motor Club confirmed John Hunter Nemechek is out at their NASCAR Cup Series organization in 2027.
Nemechek will vacate the No. 42 Toyota Camry XSE next season. There is no confirmed word on who will replace him. However, Josh Berry is the reported favorite for the ride.
"Legacy Motor Club has made the decision to part ways with John Hunter Nemechek at the conclusion of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season," the organization stated Wednesday. "We are grateful for John Hunter's contributions to Legacy Motor Club and appreciate his professionalism and commitment to the organization through his time with the team."
The organization reiterated their commitment to finishing 2026 strong with Nemechek. They also wished him well in the future.
Nemechek's future is unknown. However, he expressed his gratitude for his time with the team and optimism for his future despite the disappointment.
"While I am obviously disappointed with their decision, I am as motivated as ever," Nemechek stated. "I can't wait to continue this journey, as I know my best days are ahead. This is a tough sport and I am so thankful for the love and sport... that have kept me lifted up through good times and bad."
Nemechek thanked TRD President Tyler Gibbs, TRD's Jack Irving, sponsor Pye Barker, his JHN Autosports teams and "so many others".
"For now, I'm going to hung my family, focus on putting together 10 great races to finish the year and figuring out what comes next," Nemechek stated.
Nemechek has 11 NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series wins and 13 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series wins. He made the Chase in all six of his lower series seasons for points, including a NOAPS Championship Four appearance in 2023 and an NCTS Championship Four appearance in 2021.
Possible landing spots are mainly in NCTS competition, including Front Row Motorsports' No. 38 truck, Halmar-Friesen Racing and TRICON Garage, given the free agent climate and Nemechek's connections.
NOAPS rides, at least competitive ones, are more limited. Nemechek has raced for Sam Hunt Racing, which is a team that has an open ride for 2027.
Legacy's other driver, Erik Jones, is likely to return to his No. 43 Toyota in 2027. A third entry is highly likely to be announced with Riley Herbst as the likely driver for that car.
Nothing is confirmed yet, however.
