Riley Herbst will miss Saturday's Coke Zero Sugar 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway and Harrison Burton will fill in for him.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Riley Herbst will miss Saturday's Coke Zero Sugar 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway.
Harrison Burton, the 2024 Coke Zero Sugar 400 winner, will fill in for Herbst. 23XI Racing confirmed he will miss the race due to "lingering effects" from a crash last Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Herbst crashed in turn three after tempers flared between him and Michael McDowell, resulting in the wreck. NASCAR didn't penalize McDowell for the incident.
Herbst qualified his No. 35 Toyota in fifth Friday for Saturday's race. However, he woke up Saturday with "lingering effects" from the crash that caused him to miss the race.
"Herbst woke up with lingering effects from last weekend's incident and, along with the team decided it was in his best interest to step out of the car for tonight's race at Daytona International Speedway," 23XI Racing stated.
The words, "lingering effects," have often been used in reference to a concussion or other issues with a driver's head, such as vertigo that Alex Bowman dealt with earlier this season. However, 23XI hasn't confirmed what the exact issues are for Herbst.
It's unknown if Herbst will miss any more races. Burton drives the No. 24 Toyota for Sam Hunt Racing in the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and will be at Darlington Raceway if he needs to fill in for Herbst.
