Tyler Reddick will start on the pole for the NASCAR Cup Series Chase opener at Darlington Raceway.
DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Tyler Reddick will start Sunday's Cook Southern 500 right where he finished the last time the NASCAR Cup Series raced at Darlington Raceway.
Reddick will start first after lightning led to NASCAR canceling practice and qualifying Saturday. The spring Darlington winner described the situation as "like best case scenario for us" after having hiccups with inspection.
Like what happened last weekend at Daytona, Reddick's No. 45 car failed inspection the first time through. That put them to the back of the line to go through a second time. They passed that time but were waiting to get the shocks when the weather moved in.
"We were kind of stuck there a bit and when it cleared up for a little bit there, we had just got to pit road, got done with the warm-up. We were probably, I don't even know, 20 seconds away from rolling when they called it. We were just a little bit behind, just having to wait the first lightning hold out. So, I fired it up, but I didn't even move. That's okay. I was pretty happy last time I was here," Reddick said.
In the spring, Reddick overcame damage to the alternator and a battery change to go from the pole, to second in the first stage, to the rear to start the second stage, to fifth at the end of that stage, to victory lane after the checkered flag flew on lap 293 with Reddick out in front for the 77th circuit of the day.
That day, Daniel Suarez matched his finishing position to his car number. Come Sunday, his No. 7 Chevrolet will share the front row with Reddick with the metric giving him a second-place start.
The metric gave Daytona winner Ryan Preece a third-place starting position for Sunday, sharing row two with points leader Denny Hamlin. Austin Cindric (sixth) and Chase Briscoe (seventh) are the other Chase drivers starting inside the top-10 for Sunday's race.
Michael McDowell (fifth), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (eighth), Austin Dillon (ninth) and Alex Bowman (10th) are the non-Chase drivers starting inside the top-10.
A total of 10 Chase drivers are starting outside of the top-10, as follows:
Christopher Bell 11th, Joey Logano 13th, Bubba Wallace 17th, Chase Elliott 18th, William Byron 20th, Ryan Blaney 24th, Kyle Larson 25th, Ty Gibbs 28th, Carson Hocevar 34th, Chris Buescher 35th.
To get an idea of how much the standings could shake up after Darlington, here's what the points standings look like based on where the Chase drivers are starting (not including stage points and only counting the points for finishing position):
- Denny Hamlin 2133
- Tyler Reddick 2120
- Ryan Blaney 2088
- Chase Briscoe 2085
- Christopher Bell 2076
- Ty Gibbs 2069
- Daniel Suarez 2060
- Chase Elliott 2059
- Joey Logano 2059
- Kyle Larson 2057
- Austin Cindric 2036
- Ryan Preece 2034
- Chris Buescher 2032
- William Byron 2032
- Bubba Wallace 2030
- Carson Hocevar 2023
