With the loss of Ariel Hukporti, the Philadelphia 76ers are scrambling to find replacements. There may be two players flying under-the-radar.
When the Philadelphia 76ers constructed their roster, they knew they would have to sacrifice a few things. One of those things was depth at the center position. The thought was that they had enough with Adem Bona and Ariel Hukporti to backup Joel Embiid.
Unfortunately, Bona is already dealing with an injury, and now Hukporti has suffered an Achilles injury that has sidelined him indefinitely. Now, the 76ers have to figure out where to go from here. With both backups injured, there’s going to have to be something done by the front office to accommodate these unforeseen events.
The other problem they face is the lack of cap space. With only 1.8 million to play with before hitting the first apron, it's hard to sign someone. This makes a move for a center even more difficult, but there are still a few players they can add for emergency purposes:
Jamarion Sharp
Sharp is a seven-foot-five center that was recently released by the LA Clippers. If the 76ers want, they could sign him to a two-way contract that could allow him to join the team without the 76ers going over the first apron. Sharp played for the Toronto Raptors in the Summer League and won the Defensive Player of the League while playing for the Texas Legends. Sharp averaged 7.7 blocks and would provide size and rim protection. They already have another 7-foot center in Embiid and Tack Fall (who is dealing with a hip injury), so this would be the perfect fit for him.
Rafael Castro
Another undrafted rookie who could be an easy option for the 76ers. Let’s remember that they only need someone for depth. They don’t have to be some world-renowned center that can serve you 20 and 10 a night. Castro could actually provide those kinds of numbers once he matures. Castro is a 6-foot-10 center with a 7-foot-1 wingspan and has some definite scoring ability. Castro was waived by the Houston Rockets and could be another player signed to a two-way contract. Castro averaged 15.3 points and 9.1 rebounds while playing for George Washington University.
It’s going to be a rough road if the 76ers choose not to find another body for the center position. But these two players could be an easy answer that won’t cause them any financial struggle and would be immediate help for a position crying out for help. The ball is in the 76ers' front office, and it could make the start of the season rough until they get back to full strength.
