A new analytics specialist has joined the 76ers team. This could be a special moment that transcends the franchise.
When the Philadelphia 76ers started their process of improving the franchise, it started with the front office with the firing of Daryl Morey.
Following shortly after was the trade for star wing Jaylen Brown, before making the blockbuster signing of future Hall of Famer LeBron James.
Now the team has made a decision that could have a positive impact for the future. The Philadelphia 76ers have hired former Denver Nuggets assistant general manager Tommy Balcetis as their new Head of Basketball Intelligence, Analytics, and Innovation. Balcetis worked with the Nuggets executive team from 2013 to 2025 and has been their assistant GM since 2020. During his tenure as the assistant, he made strides to improve their roster and was part of the decision that saw Aaron Gordon join the Nuggets in a trade with Orlando.
As Balcetis rose up the ranks within the Nuggets organization, he’s been able to learn what goes into building a championship roster. He grew as a student of analytics and used that to help understand the best ways to utilize the players on the roster. What he gained from the analytic numbers gave way to bringing gameplan ideas for the coaches to better the team.
Now that he’s a part of the Philadelphia 76ers, he can contribute to the future of Philadelphia basketball. There could be a chance that the two-year window made by James could now be forgone, allowing a higher possibility of winning with the additions of certain players.
Balcetis is coming from a winning culture in Denver, with hopes of continuing that success in Philadelphia. While it is the players that make up the winning properties of a team, one can’t just put a player on a team and think it’s going to work out; this isn’t 2k. Those are the kinds of decisions that make Balcetis such a valuable piece. While he may not be the one who pulls the trigger on a player, he may be the voice that drives the decision. He and head coach Nick Nurse could be a match made in heaven, as Nurse shares the same philosophies.
Nurse has always thought ahead and has used innovative tactics to help his team be victorious. Now, in a new role, Balcetis can do the research and pinpoint certain things others overlook. With this new addition, there could be hope that championship basketball could remain a part of Philadelphia for years to come.
