The Philadelphia 76ers made it a point to make this team better from top to bottom.
The additions of Jaylen Brown and LeBron James have given the confidence and true potential to win a championship. Throw in a new look, Joel Embiid, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for a delicious treat.
However, with all these big names and three of their stars on max contracts, it leaves little for the A next season, even if they win a championship. Well, they may still be able to sign a big-name player based on the projections for the 2027-2028 salary cap.
According to the Athletic, the salary cap could jump up from 174 million to 176 million. If that’s the case, it adds an extra two million, which could help the team from being stuck in the second apron. The experts in the front office will have to do some dancing with the salary cap, but it could include letting some players go. They have a few players on one-year deals, and depending on how the season goes, they could play themselves out of a contract.
A few players have player options like James and Anfernee Simons, and if they opt in, it could make things much worse. The good thing is that as of now, Philadelphia is under both aprons and is able to do as they please. If they were to be stuck in the second apron, they would be restricted to what they could do financially.
Trading would be highly difficult, and there would be a potential loss of draft picks. Whether the team allocates money in the right places is doable; rest assured this new team in the fancy suits will do what it takes to remain a contender.
Even though the season has yet to start, many can assume they’ll be looking for a center and another forward. That’s why having a salary cap is such a big thing. If not, you could end up like the Denver Nuggets, who had to let a promising player like Peyton Watson walk because their money is so tight.
The 76ers could look at free agency and go after a player like Deandre Ayton or Derick Lively, just to name a couple. They may be cheap, but it could help if they get the salary cap projected.
When the season ends, it doesn’t mean the front office takes a break. In fact, they assess this very thing and go to work.
If Philadelphia can have another offseason like 202y, it’s sure to put them back in title contention.
