Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe played in the preseason opener and looked to be in sync. Now, we may know exactly why that is.
Jaylen Brown has been talked about as one of the biggest acquisitions in recent Philadelphia 76ers history. He’s being brought in to take some of the load off of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in the scoring department.
He proved that he can handle the load and then some. In his preseason debut against the New York Knicks, he scored 22 points and shot 3-5 from the three point line. Even with his outstanding performance, he couldn’t stop praising the youngster, VJ Edgecombe.
“I love VJ already. That’s one of my favorite people in the world, and we just met. His talent level is off the charts.” said Brown to reporters in the press conference.
His praise for Edgecombe is very warranted. Edgecombe dished out seven assists as they were the only two starters to play in the first preseason game. This could be the sign of a great friendship between the two. Edgecombe shared the same sentiments when he was told about Brown’s comments.
Edgecombe seemed flattered hearing what Brown said and said that he leans on Brown for his knowledge of the game and he feels their relationship will continue to grow. Edgecombe even talked about the time they spent together in Los Angeles, and it showed him a different side of Brown. He realized that Brown is a real down-to-earth guy, and it made their bond even stronger, and it’s only October.
If these two continue with this kind of friendship, we could see a Jimmy Butler-Buddy Hield kind of brotherhood. This is exactly the kind of thing you want to see from a Philadelphia team trying to be better than they have been in seasons past. Both players are a part of the bigger picture for this team, and they will be a major part of not only the scoring but also the defensive side as well.
They have the chance to be two of the best defenders in the entire NBA. So that makes this pairing even more dangerous. LeBron James even pointed out during his Mind the Game podcast that he wants to see these two join forces on defense. James believes that no one is better than these two when they set their minds to it. James wants to see more of that defensive aggression from Edgecombe, and if anyone can pull it out of him, it’s Brown.
Brown’s influence on this team is already starting to take shape, and it’s refreshing to witness. Brown has always had leadership qualities, and now he’s bonding with his new teammates in ways he may not have thought possible.
These two players are going to be huge in what the 76ers want to do. So if they can bond like brothers, it’s only going to make the season better for everyone involved.
