The Philadelphia 76ers are acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in a blockbuster trade.
The Philadelphia 76ers are making a blockbuster trade no one saw coming.
The 76ers are sending Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks to the Boston Celtics in exchange for All-NBA wing Jaylen Brown, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
"BLOCKBUSTER: The Boston Celtics have agreed to trade Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks, sources tell ESPN," Charania posted to X.
This is a massive win for the 76ers.
George is on a brutal contract and is well past his prime while Brown is the 2024 NBA Finals MVP and is coming off an All-NBA campaign. Brown, last season, averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists on 47.7% shooting and 34.7% shooting from three-point range in 71 games.
George, meanwhile, recorded just 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game on 43.9% shooting and 39.2% shooting from three-point range in 37 appearances.
The 76ers now form a 'Big Three' of Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Brown. V.J. Edgecombe and Dean Wade will serve as the other two starters for Philadelphia.
This trade instantly vaults the 76ers among favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference, assuming Joel Embiid can stay healthy when the playoffs come around. A trio of Maxey, Edgecombe, and Brown should have no trouble carrying Philadelphia through the regular season.
For the Celtics, this trade makes little sense. Unless Boston has the utmost confidence in George as a player still, losing Brown for this return package is brutal. The relationship between Brown and the Celtics was clearly too far gone after offering him for Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the 76ers took full advantage.
