An NBA insider revealed LeBron James' free agency decision will be based on "competitive basketball."
The Philadelphia 76ers are in the mix to sign free agent LeBron James.
After swapping Paul George and draft capital for former Boston Celtics superstar wing Jaylen Brown, the 76ers instantly evolved into one of the NBA's strongest championship contenders.
NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN revealed James' priority in choosing his next team is playing competitive basketball, which is great news for the 76ers. Philadelphia can offer him a prime opportunity to contend for a fifth championship.
"Him and his agent Rich Paul, they're in fact-finding, information-gathering stages right now, so you absorb the info, and I do expect over the coming days LeBron James, Rich Paul will take the next steps in their conversations with teams," Charania said on Get Up. "Rich Paul said on his Game Over podcast this morning that this decision will be about competitive basketball."
James would slot seamlessly into the 76ers' starting lineup alongside Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Brown, and Joel Embiid. This would allow forward Dean Wade to shift to the second unit, where he'd be joined by the likes of rookie Labaron Philon Jr. and free agency signing Anfernee Simons.
That roster would be the unanimous favorite to hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy at next season's end.
It would not be an easy path, however, as the reigning champion New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Toronto Raptors present serious challenges in the Eastern Conference. Not to mention, if the 76ers are able to reach the NBA Finals, they'd likely need to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder or San Antonio Spurs.
If James' decision is strictly about playing competitive basketball rather than earning another lucrative contract, the Sixers should indeed be among frontrunners.
