Tyrese Maxey scored nearly 30 points per game last season. Now, he may have to share the ball, and it could change everything
The Philadelphia 76ers are going to be a major problem offensively. Having such effective scoring on one team could be a problem for anybody. The real question is, who will lead the team in scoring?
LeBron James is an unlikely candidate, as he has to be the floor general and get everyone else involved. While Jaylen Brown has been putting in work with trainers, it’s less likely that he would be the one, as he’s going to be handling things on both ends of the floor as the primary defender. The best answer for this is easily Tyrese Maxey.
Maxey led the team in scoring a season ago, and it stands to see him repeat that feat. While Embiid is going to be the best player on the floor for Philadelphia, it doesn’t mean that this would translate into the top scorer on the team.
Maxey is going to have the status of Stephen Curry. No, not in the sense of him shooting threes from half-court, but how he will move on the offensive side. Curry is known to run around behind screens, tiring out his opponent. Expect to see Maxey do the same. So when he gets to the third quarter he’ll have more space to get off his shot with better spacing.
Maxey had a 46% shooting from the field. When it came to the shooting beyond the arc, his conversion rate was a little over 36%.
These numbers aren’t bad, and he averaged over 28 points with these stats. Now imagine having Brown, VJ Edgecombe, James, and Embiid all on the court to help him out. All these guys can get the ball and score freely. So with that in mind, it’s going to be hard to decide who they have to focus on defensively.
The good thing about Maxey is his quickness allows him to get anywhere he wants on the floor. Maxey can shoot from three, dribble-drive to the paint, and score in isolation situations. Now if he can get the ball in motion, it’s going to make it that much easier.
The game plan would be to get someone like Maxey involved early and often, as he is somewhat of a volume shooter. He’s most effective at the rim at 64 percent. When he’s shooting midrange, it’s over 40 percent. All these numbers give the idea that Maxey is the one for the job.
Maxey has a huge task in front of him, and it’s going to be much easier when you have players like Embiid, Brown, and James.
