VJ Edgecombe is a major part of the 76ers' championship aspirations. Unfortunately, Edgecombe feels another team takes high priority over his NBA team.

VJ Edgecombe and Jaylen Brown’s relationship continues to grow off the court. The two Philadelphia 76ers teammates were seen on Brown’s live stream.

While on the stream, Edgecombe was asked what it would mean for him to represent the Bahamas in the Olympics, and Edgecombe’s response may take you by surprise.  In fact, it may cause a few people to look at him a bit differently.

“This might sound crazy, but I would rather do that than win a championship.” Edgecombe answered.

While it is very admirable to want to represent your country and bring a medal to your birthplace, it’s a bit off-putting to say it matters more than a championship. Some could even say it means that the love you gained from playing the game of basketball doesn’t matter because you don’t care to win one for the team that brought you in as an important piece to what they want to do.

You know, Joel Embiid faced a similar situation when he chose to play for the USA team instead of France and ultimately went on to win a gold medal. While it all involved the international teams, it shares the same equivalency in the sense that it means you’re choosing one team over the other. Which is essentially what Edgecombe did by picking the Bahamas team over the 76ers.

Winning a championship should be at the top of any NBA player’s to-do list. It’s one of the many reasons players play in the NBA. This could lead some fans, especially in the city of Philadelphia, to turn their backs on the young player because he chose another team over theirs.

Quite frankly it’s very admirable why Edgecombe chose his country over his paycheck. This is his home country after all. Edgecombe played basketball in the Bahamas until he entered the ninth grade, where he moved to the United States. Once he went and played for Baylor, his talents were on full display. His quickness and ability to score in a myriad of different ways is what drew the attention of the 76ers.  Now that he is a part of this storied franchise, they will need him to win a championship, even if it’s not the most important thing to him.

Edgecombe has made his decision of what he values more, but it doesn’t mean a championship isn’t what he has set as one of his goals. If he can win a championship and a medal for his country, that’s the icing on the cake, but he shouldn’t have to forget his roots just because he makes money for an NBA franchise.
