The Milwaukee Bucks suffered their third-straight loss last week to finish the halfway point of the season with a 17-24 record. In a year, the Eastern Conference was viewed as weak entering the season, with the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers dealing with major injuries; the Bucks just haven't been able to capitalize.
On Monday night, looking to get back in the win column, the Bucks avoided a fourth-straight loss and secured a 112-110 win over the Atlanta Hawks. It was Giannis Antetokounmpo who led the way with a 21-point, 17-rebound performance, but it was a total team effort that came together during their three-day break.
After the game, Bucks veteran Bobby Portis spoke with reporters about the team's willingness to share the ball on Monday, and how their work in practice reflected in the win.
"I just think today was one of our better games with everybody having the ball hopping. Obviously, Giannis gonna have the ball the most, but I think just as a collective team unit, we were good to great shots, you know, swing, swing. Maybe I don't get the assist, but I get the hockey assist," Portis said.
Six of the nine players who played for Milwaukee finished with double-digit points, with Kevin Porter Jr. finishing just shy with nine. Additionally, they had 24 assists on 39 made shots, with every player on the team having at least one assist.
"The ball was hopping, and it was finding who needs to shoot...You know, credit practice. We were swinging in practice, and we actually implemented what we did in practice over to the game and ultimately got a win tonight," he added.
In terms of the outside shooting, it was AJ Green and Myles Turner who were leading the charge for the Bucks. Green finished 6-of-12 from beyond the arc, while Turner was 4-of-6.
As mentioned by Turner, Giannis is gonna end up having the ball the most of the time, but if the team is able to play as a unit otherwise, it makes life a whole lot easier for Giannis and the team.
The Bucks will want to keep this momentum going and will need a better performance than a narrow win over the Hawks when they see the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday in their first matchup this season.
It'll be interesting to see how Doc Rivers manages the rotation going forward with Kyle Kuzma getting the start over Porter Jr., and Pete Nance joining the rotation as well. However, with all the talk around Giannis' future in Milwaukee, winning will cool down the trade rumors for the time being.
