The conflict in Milwaukee continues.

The Milwaukee Bucks are a mess right now and everybody can see it.

The team sits at 31-49 on the season, already eliminated from the playoffs for the first time since 2016, and the biggest question hanging over the franchise has nothing to do with wins and losses.

It has everything to do with Giannis Antetokounmpo and whether he will still be wearing a Bucks jersey when next season starts.

GM Jon Horst sat down with Eric Nehm of The Athletic this week and was asked about the future, and his answer did not exactly settle anything down.

Horst said that both trading Giannis and building around him are options the team is looking at, using the word "viable" for both paths.

"I do, yeah. Absolutely. And not only just from my perspective, but I also believe from Giannis' mindset and his perspective," Horst said. "Whether we need couple's therapy or whatever, the assets will still be there. I do feel empowered that yeah, those things are both viable things for us to look at and consider."

The Whole Situation Is Wild

The fact that a GM is even saying the words "couple's therapy" when talking about his franchise player tells you how far this thing has fallen.

Giannis has not played since March 15 because of a knee injury, and his 2025-26 numbers were still elite when he was on the floor, averaging 27.6 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists across 36 games.

The problem is everything around him.

The Bucks tried to build a contender by adding Myles Turner and bringing in Doc Rivers, but the whole thing blew up in their face.

Giannis went public with his frustration, saying he felt healthy enough to play but the team would not clear him while openly questioning what game was being played behind the scenes.

Reports came out that he told the Bucks multiple times during the season that it was time to part ways, and that the New York Knicks are the only team outside of Milwaukee he would consider playing for.

Co-owner Wes Edens already drew a line in the sand, saying Giannis will either sign a four-year, $275 million extension starting October 1 or be traded, with no option to just run it back and hope things work out.

Milwaukee Needs to Move On

Horst wanting to keep the door open makes sense from a negotiating standpoint, but the writing has been on the wall for months now.

The Bucks have three tradable first-round picks this summer including a potential top-10 selection, and they reportedly wanted young franchise-caliber players like VJ Edgecombe or Evan Mobley in return at the deadline but could not get it done.

Now here they are finishing out a lost season with their best player sitting on the bench in street clothes.

The longer Milwaukee waits the worse its leverage gets, because Giannis has one guaranteed year left on his deal and a player option after that, which means the Bucks are staring down the possibility of him walking for nothing if they do not move him soon.

Teams were already calling at the deadline and more will be in the mix once the offseason opens up, with the Warriors, Knicks, Celtics and Heat all connected to him in some way.

Talking about "couple's therapy" is nice and all, but sometimes you just need to accept that the relationship is over and move forward.

Milwaukee should trade Giannis this summer, get the best package they can and start building something new.

The era is done.
