Giannis' future may not be in Milwaukee.

The contentious relationship between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks was one of the biggest takeaways from the Bucks' disappointing 2025-26 season.

In the first half of the season, there was constant speculation around whether or not Antetokounmpo would force a trade away from Milwaukee by the deadline and where he would land if that was the case.

That speculation was fueled by Antetokounmpo's own comments. Throughout the season, he would sound off on how upset he was with the team and their lack of production, how he felt like he needed to do everything for the Bucks in order to win and that above all, he wanted to play for a contender.

Even after he stayed with the Bucks past the deadline, his comments and the subsequent speculation hasn't stopped.

Is Giannis Staying?

He's continued to speak to the media about his desire to play for a winner and even though he's qualified that by including that his preference is to win with the Bucks first and foremost and he's expressed his gratitude for what Milwaukee has done for him.

But, it's clear from his tone and comments that his feelings toward the organization have soured.

That leaves the Bucks in a difficult spot. Giannis is guaranteed under contract with the team for at least one more season, then his place with the franchise will be fully up to him as his contract shifts to a player option for the 2027-28 season, but if things proceed like they did this season, the concept of him forcing a trade is still possible.

To get ahead of that, the Bucks could orchestrate a trade in this offseason in order to start the 2026-27 campaign fresh with a rebuilt roster. It's just not clear how the future will proceed between the Bucks and their franchise star at this point, but Milwaukee owner Jimmy Haslam said that's something the team is working on.

Haslam Addresses The Issue

"We will do what's best for Giannis [and] what's best for the organization," Haslam said. "We don't know whether will stay with us or not, but we will work through that with Giannis in the coming weeks."

Haslam expressed his gratitude for Antetokounmpo in his comments, but it seems that he's also preparing himself and his team for a future without the Bucks star. Haslam even expressed that to new head coach Taylor Jenkins, telling him to take the job expecting to coach Antetokounmpo, as that's not a certainty.

Whether or not Antteokounmpo stays with the team is something that Haslam wants to figure out as soon as possible, preferably before the 2026 Draft.

His presence, or lack thereof, on the team dramatically affects what the Bucks' strategy and targets in the draft will be. Either they'll be selecting complementary players to Antetokounmpo's play style, or trying to replace him.

Haslamn affirmed that he and Antetokounmpo have a good relationship, despite what some reports have said, but overall, his comments don't reflect that of an owner that is confident he'll be starting next season with his star player on the roster.
