Will Giannis Antetokounmpo return to the Bucks?
Giannis Antetokounmpo will now make his home in Miami after the blockbuster offseason trade.
After spending the first 13 seasons of his career in Milwaukee, the Bucks traded him and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft (used to select Nate Ament), unprotected 2031 and 2033 first-round picks, a 2030 first-round pick swap, and a 2033 second-round pick.
Giannis was drafted by the Bucks with the 15th overall pick in the 2013 draft at the age of 18.
Coming over from Greece, Giannis grew up in Milwaukee, making the city his own by the time he left.
A Potential Return?
Speaking on the AnesΤea The Podcast and ΤΑ ΝΕΑ, Giannis opened up regarding his love for Milwaukee and a potential return.
“The city of Milwaukee, I love the city of Milwaukee. I will love it until I die. They made me who I am today,” he said, before explaining that he’s able to live his life around the city without being stopped by everyone.
He said that no matter where he plays, Milwaukee will always be in his heart.
“When I finish this cycle with Miami, which I don't know when it will end, and if, I will definitely return to Milwaukee, and I don't know if they want me then,” he said.
Giannis has one year left on his deal before he can exercise his player option in the 2027 offseason. He will become an unrestricted free agent in 2028 unless he signs an extension next offseason or opts out of his player option and hits free agency next offseason.
What Does It Mean?
Giannis has always spoken of the city of Milwaukee, and while he wanted to move on from the team in order to compete for another championship, he’s made it clear he didn’t want to move on from the city.
It’s the city that raised and shaped him and the only city he’s really known in America.
Though Giannis’ contract could end with Miami as early as next season, that doesn’t mean he’ll leave Miami or return to Milwaukee then. It does seem likely that he will return to Milwaukee before his career ends, likely in his final years before heading off into retirement.
No matter where Milwaukee is when Giannis decides he wants to return, they should welcome him back with open arms.
