The Milwaukee Bucks suffered their third-straight defeat on Thursday night to the San Antonio Spurs, as the Bucks struggled on both ends of the floor en route to a 119-101 victory for the home Spurs.
While the two teams were brought up frequently next to each other in trade rumors this past offseason, around Giannis Antetokounmpo potentially heading to San Antonio, the two-time MVP appeared in San Antonio on Thursday as a member of the Bucks, for now.
However, it did give fans an entertaining matchup between two of the best international stars in the NBA, with Victor Wembanyama taking the edge in this contest.
With Giannis in his 13th year and Wembanyama in his third, it seems as though the 2023 first overall pick is already playing to a level similar to the Bucks star. After the loss, Giannis was asked by reporters what he's seen from Wembanyama on the court, sharing high praise on the heights he can see him reaching.
"Definitely is a way better player. Not just from the first year, but from the last year that we faced them, I think, in my opinion, way better...He's trying to get to his spot more, he's trying to facilitate more for his teammates, he's getting the ball closer to the basket, trying to get in the paint because he's 7'5"," Giannis said.
Giannis also touched on the fact that Wembyanama is seeing a lot of this success because he's reduced his three-point attempts drastically. Wembanyama is attempting a career low in threes per game this season, dropping to 4.2 attempts per game compared to 8.8 attempts the year prior.
"Had the opportunity to speak with him a little bit after the game. I believe that as long as he [stays] healthy, he is the future of this league, and the sky is the limit," he added.
Two players who are tall, physically dominant, and excel with the ball in their hands, Giannis and Wembanyama share a lot of similarities, but Wembanyama's potential just seems limitless.
Wembanyama's career is still very young, and there's no telling what his health will look like going forward. However, with his ability to play elite basketball on both ends of the court and stretch the floor, something Giannis can't really do, he has all the tools to end his career as a Top 10-level player.
Surpassing Giannis in accolades won't be easy, as Wembanyama will need to rack up plenty of All-NBA, All-Defensive, and All-Star selections, as well as earn an MVP or two and some championships to go with it. Wembanyama is still just 22 years old, so who knows what else he can add to his game.
Based on what fans have seen, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Wembanyama surpass Giannis in the all-time rankings in a decade.
