The Bucks saw the need to trade Antetokounmpo coming.
Giannis Antetokounmpo parting ways with the Milwaukee Bucks seemed like an inevitability after months of speculation, vague comments from the star himself and the Milwaukee front office announcing that they were taking calls on their franchise star.
It eventually culminated in the Bucks sending Antetokounmpo to the Miami heat in exchange for a massive haul that could set the Bucks up for a rebuild far sooner than anyone could have expected.
But throughout the process and the sweepstakes and the uncertainty about what was actually going to happen with Antetokounmpo, there were a handful of moments that made it clear to Milwaukee that the relationship the team had with it's franchise star was beyond repair, according to a recent report from ESPN.
Writing on the Wall
“But it wasn't until this season ended with such a resounding whimper -- with Milwaukee winning just 32 games, the league launching an investigation into the team based on Antetokounmpo's accusations that the club wouldn't let him play, and missing the play-in tournament -- that the Bucks had finally accepted their fate and focused on the return they could get for him," the article read.
The most obvious factor mentioned is the team's poor performance, something that Antetokounmpo himself drew attention too loudly and often. It was the Bucks' worst regular season finish and their first time missing the playoffs in a decade.
It was their struggles that originally fueled Antetokounmpo's very apparent discontent and his statements that focused on him playing for a championship, either with Milwaukee or elsewhere.
While the team had made attempts in the past to try and build around Antetokounmpo, notably by acquiring Damian Lillard in what became an ultimately unproductive experiment, the Bucks continued to decline and Antetokounmpo continued to notice and draw attention to it.
A Mutiny in the Locker Room
The second piece of what became the writing on the wall for the Bucks was Antetokounmpo's conduct that was so detrimental to the team that it prompted a NBA investigation for the possibility of anti-competition tactics.
Antetokounmpo's season ended when he hyperextended his right knee during a game on March 15 and he never returned to the court again after that. The issue arose when Antetokounmpo eventually complained during a press conference that he was healthy, but that the Bucks medical team would not clear him nor allow him to play.
That was truly the moat aggressive display that Antetokounmpo had made against the Bucks and while the investigation that came about because of his comments didn't amount to anything, it was still a clear sign of the state of things within the organization.
It would have taken a lot for the Bucks to turn things around to the point that they could have made Antetokounmpo want to stay and based on how things transpired over months, they came to realize that fighting to keep him stay wasn't going to help the team more than preparing for him to leave would.
