The Milwaukee Bucks have cut ties with a recent addition.
The Milwaukee Bucks made a surprising move on Wednesday, cutting ties with a player they just acquired after the NBA trade deadline.
ESPN's Shams Charania reports that the Bucks waived guard Cam Thomas, ending his tenure with the team.
Thomas was signed on February 8 after being waived by the Brooklyn Nets. In 18 games, all off the bench, with the Bucks, Thomas averaged 10.7 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists while shooting 43% from the field and 27% from three.
He played 16.6 minutes per game, but also received two Did Not Plays on March 15 and 17. He returned to the lineup for two games, logging 23 minutes against the Utah Jazz and 16 minutes against the Phoenix Suns, before being waived by the team.
Cam Thomas Highs In Milwaukee
The Bucks signed Thomas in hopes of bolstering their offense as they tried to secure a Play-In spot despite missing Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Thomas has a reputation for being a microwave scorer, averaging 22.5 points for the Nets in 2023-24 and a career high 24 points in 2024-25.
He fell out of the rotation this season in Brooklyn as the team invested in their recent draft picks and looked to develop more all-around players, but Thomas' value as a scorer was still viable.
In his second game with Milwaukee, Thomas scored 34 points on 12-20 shooting and 4-6 from three against the Orlando Magic, giving the Bucks and Giannis hope that things could work out.
He followed those games up with 12 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder, 27 points against the New Orleans Pelicans, and 15 points against the Toronto Raptors.
The Bucks went 5-2 in Thomas' first seven games with the team, and head coach Doc Rivers compared his scoring ability to Sixth Man of the Year legends Lou Williams and Jamal Crawford.
Cam Thomas Lows In Milwaukee
After the first seven games, things fell apart for Thomas and the Bucks as the team went 1-8 over the next nine games, leading to Thomas being benched for two games. He averaged just 7.3 points on 35% shooting from the field during that stretch.
The scoring dropped off, and his defensive shortcomings became even more apparent as Milwaukee had a 128.9 defensive rating with him on the floor compared to a 117 defensive rating with him off.
When asked why Thomas fell out of favor, Rivers simply said, "There are things we don't need to talk about."
In his final game with the Bucks, Thomas scored seven points in 16 minutes in a victory over the Phoenix Suns, but was a -6.
