Ranking Bucks’ Three-Way Trade with Suns and Bulls cover image

The Bucks have acquired Ousmane Dieng and Nigel Hayes-Davis.

The trade deadline has come and passed and the trade that everyone was expecting, the trade that had been talked about all season, the trade that would have sent a frustrated Giannis Antetokounmpo away from the Milwaukee Bucks and to a contender instead, did not happen.

The Bucks retained their franchise player for the remainder of the season after apparently not receiving any offers from prospective teams that were to their liking and instead have pivoted to acquiring a number of smaller deals instead to fill out their roster.

The most significant deal that the Bucks did make was a three team trade involving the Phoenix Suns and Chicago Bulls that sent Cole Anthony and Amir Coffey from the Bucks to the Suns, Ousmane Dieng and Nigel Hayes-Davis to Milwaukee and Nick Richards to Chicago.

Introducing Dieng

Dieng is a 22-year-old big man drafted 11th overall by the New York Knicks in 2022 before being traded over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Dieng has had possibly the most active trade deadline of any player as he was first traded by the Thunder to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Mason Plumlee, then traded over to the Bulls later in the day along with Collin Sexton and three second-round draft picks in exchange for Coby White and Mike Conley Jr.

Now, Dieng's found his home with the Bucks after skipping around four teams in two days. This season Dieng is averaging 3.7 points, 1.6 rebounds and one assist per game while playing an average of 10.9 minutes per game.

Dieng split time between the Thunder and the G-League in his four seasons with Oklahoma City. He's obviously a young player with size and defensive upside that can help the Bucks gain some additional physicality and give Antetokounmpo another option to switch out with.

Introducing Hayes-Davis

Nigel Hayes-Davis is a 31 year-old small forward who has been a journeyman in the NBA and struggled to find a permanent home. After going undrafted in 2017, bounced around the league on a series of G-League and 10-day contracts.

He made his NBA debut with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018 on a 10-day contract and played for the Lakers, Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings all in 2018 on a series of temporary contracts.

After 2018, Hayes-Davis played seven seasons overseas in Turkey, Lithuania and Spain until finally finding his way back to the NBA with the Phoenix Suns ahead of this season and finally being traded to the Bucks.

In 27 games this season Hayes-Davis has averaged 1.3 points, 1.2 rebounds, 0.3 assists and 0.3 steals per game while playing an average of 7.2 minutes per game. Hayes-Davis is another backup forward that helps the Bucks on the size front, but doesn't move the needle for the team offensively.

Hayes-Davis played his college career at the University of Wisconsin and coming to the Bucks is a homecoming of sorts for him.

What Has Milwaukee Gained?

For Milwaukee, the massive three-team trade offloads some unnecessary guards in the form of Anthony and Coffey and reinforces their big man depth, but the acquisitions they've made aren't going to be any kind of immediate impact players.

Dieng provides the most upside with his youth, but the Bucks still have a long way to go to be competitive while still being on the clock to put a reliable roster together to entice Antetokounmpo to stay longterm.

Overall, the Bucks have kept their superstar, but not accomplished much else with their new players.
