How will Milwaukee fans react to Giannis Antetokounmpo returning?
The full NBA schedule has yet to be released, but one game that Milwaukee Bucks fans will immediately circle is Giannis Antetokounmpo returning to the city.
The Bucks traded Giannis and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat in the offseason, getting Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, No. 13 pick (2026), 2030 pick swap, 2031 first-round pick, 2033 first-round pick, and a 2033 second-round pick in return.
Giannis was drafted by the Bucks in 2013 and transformed into one of the best players in the NBA and the best player in franchise history during his 13 seasons with the team. The trade had been building for a year before the team finally pulled the trigger ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft.
Giannis' Return Overlooked?
Appearing on NBA Today, ESPN's Dave McMenamin said that he was looking forward to Giannis' return not only to see the reception that Giannis gets, but also the offseason incident between Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo, where Bam hit his former teammate.
The altercation stemmed from DMs leaking that allegedly showed Herro calling out Adebayo, writing things like “You should get paid 60 million to be a top-tier defender on some nights? I’m just wondering” and “Why are Heat fans so worried about me and what I do? But I’m not the best player on the team right?”
Along with the leaked alleged DMs, Herro reposted a graphic on his Instagram stories showing the top ten worst midrange shooters in the league. Antetokounmpo was first. Adebayo was tenth.
With that incident hanging over the game, Giannis' return to Milwaukee could take a backseat as the biggest topic.
How Should Fans React?
Though things got messy between Giannis and the Milwaukee front office at the end, "The Greek Freak" was always steadfast in his love for the city and what it means to him.
Giannis wanted to compete for a championship, and Milwaukee is further away than ever. Though he did drag his feet a bit in terms of requesting a trade, he didn't force his way out or leave on bad terms with the fanbase the way other superstars have.
Giannis should be cheered during introductions for all the great memories he provided the fans, including multiple MVP seasons and a championship in 2021.
Fans may even cheer Giannis throughout the game as a way to still show their support and voice their displeasure with the front office for not keeping a sustainable team around him.
