Why Bucks Could Be Ready To Go All-in on a Rebuild

The Milwaukee Bucks made a franchise-altering move this summer as they traded away former Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat. In return, the Bucks got back Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, and Jaime Jaquez Jr., as well as multiple draft picks. 

Herro, Ware, and Jaquez are all players who will likely be key parts of the rotation for Milwaukee this upcoming season, and could be crucial to the early stages of the team's early stages of the rebuild. 

Another big part of this rebuild is the Bucks' incoming rookies. The team selected guard Brayden Burries out of Arizona with the 10th overall pick and forward Nate Ament out of Tennessee with the 13th overall pick. 

The 13th pick was part of the Giannis deal, making that selection even more crucial for Milwaukee. With the amount of assets the franchise has for the future, it's safe to say their journey to get back to championship status will be a process that will take multiple years. 

Still, this phase the franchise is going through right now was inevitable. Since their 2021 championship run, the Bucks have yet to get back to the Eastern Conference Finals and were never seen as one of the top teams in the conference since. 

Former star player Giannis Antetokounmpo told the Bucks front office multiple times during the 2025-2026 season that it was time for both parties to part ways, and he ended up being very limited in the season in terms of availability. 

Giannis expressed how much he appreciated the city of Milwaukee for embracing him, but after consistent seasons of falling short in the postseason, he felt it was time to leave. 

Now that the front office has moved off Giannis, their focus is set on the future, and maybe this franchise needed a fresh start and a group of young talent to build around. Right now, this roster has a mix of veterans and young pieces that could give them a good sense of where they are in year 1. 

There is a chance this team could surprise the Eastern Conference as a potential Play-In Tournament team, and they have some players with big upside going into 2026-2027. Their success will depend on players like Tyler Herro, who have seen success earlier in their career but now have a chance to see what they can do in an expanded role. 

Milwaukee has a chance to get back to where they once were, and if they can stay patient and develop their young pieces, they could be seeing success sooner rather than later.
