Kel’el Ware has the tools to become a cornerstone of Milwaukee’s frontcourt. This season will show how much responsibility he is ready to handle.
The Milwaukee Bucks can expect growing pains after an offseason that reshaped their roster. They can also expect a close look at Kel’el Ware, whose development could shape the team over the next several seasons.
Ware arrived from Miami in the trade that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Heat. No single player can replace what Antetokounmpo gave Milwaukee. Ware’s importance lies in a more realistic question: Can he become the Bucks’ long-term answer at center?
He has the physical tools to do that. Ware can finish above the rim, rebound and challenge shots in the paint. The opportunity in Milwaukee is to turn those abilities into dependable production with a larger role.
The 22-year-old center averaged 11.1 points and 9.0 rebounds for Miami during the 2025-26 regular season. Those are solid numbers for a young big man. His starts offered an even stronger glimpse of his potential: In 34 starts, Ware averaged 12.8 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks.

On offense, Ware can give Milwaukee’s guards a target near the basket. Strong screens and well-timed cuts can create easy chances without requiring him to have plays called for him. With Tyler Herro among the Bucks’ new additions, Ware should have opportunities to build chemistry in the pick-and-roll.
His value will also depend on what he does when he does not receive the ball. A center who occupies defenders, sets useful screens and pursues offensive rebounds can improve a possession without taking a shot.
The defensive responsibilities are tougher. Ware must protect the rim while staying disciplined against teams that pull bigs away from the basket.
His final stretch in Miami offered reminders of his impact in the paint. Ware had 24 points, 19 rebounds and seven blocks against Washington in April. Later that month, he collected 19 rebounds and five blocks in the Heat’s play-in loss to Charlotte. Those performances showed how much he can affect a game even when scoring is not his main contribution.
He will need to rebound after contests, avoid unnecessary fouls and communicate with teammates as they adjust to a changed roster.
Those details may decide how much the Bucks can rely on him. A spectacular block or dunk can show his talent. Repeating the less visible work from one possession to the next will show his growth.
A season that could shape the roster
Milwaukee has several young players to evaluate, including rookies Brayden Burries and Nate Ament. Ware stands out because establishing a reliable center would give the team a clearer foundation. It would help the Bucks understand which players fit around him and where they still need help.
There will likely be uneven nights. Ware is young, his role is changing and opponents will test him. The measure of his season should be whether he responds and becomes more consistent as the games add up.
The Bucks do not need Ware to solve every problem created by a franchise-changing trade. They need to find out whether he can handle a central role in their next chapter. If he can, his growth may prove to be Milwaukee’s most important development this season.
