The Bulls are preparing for their exhibition season opener on October 7 which will give us a chance to see new coach Tiago Splitter in action on the sidelines.
Splitter played five years under legendary Spurs coach and defensive guru Gregg Popovich in San Antonio and it served him well during his time coaching the Portland Trail Blazers.
Looking at the Bulls and Blazers' team stats from 2025-26, it's clear where Splitter can make the biggest impact: defense. The Blazers did a much better job of protecting the glass, forcing missed shots and defending the perimeter than the Bulls did last season.
This is the biggest area to watch as the season begins. If Splitter can get guys like Josh Giddey, Matas Buzelis and Caleb Wilson to buy in on the defensive end, the Bulls will be competitive in 2026-27. Expect Splitter, free agent signee Norman Powell, and new assistant coach Taj Gibson to lead the way in setting the defensive tone.
Buckle up!
