Josh Giddey did everything for Chicago on Tuesday night, and nothing was more significant than his final play. Driving into the lane, the Bulls' point guard left his feet before firing a pass to Nikola Vucevic in the corner, who drilled the game-winning three-pointer.
The shot capped off a 24-point comeback for the Eastern Conference-leading Chicago Bulls, who defeated the 76ers, 113-111, behind a miraculous late rally. The Bulls did not hold a lead for the entire game until they pulled ahead with just 3.2 seconds remaining.
Chicago picked up its first defeat of the season at the hands of the Knicks on Sunday, and appeared to be trending toward its second consecutive loss for much of the evening. But after struggling to guard Philadelphia's stars to start, the Bulls held the 76ers to just 28.9% shooting in the second half.
Giddey logged a triple-double for the second consecutive game, stuffing the stat sheet with 29 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists. Vucevic had 19 points, while Isaac Okoro and Matas Buzelis each scored in double figures as well. Jalen Smith and Kevin Huerter contributed 14 and 12 points off the bench, respectively.
Tyrese Maxey erupted for 39 points, five rebounds, five assists and three blocks to lead the way for Philly. Joel Embiid poured in 20 points, six rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Long-range shooting gave the Sixers the early advantage out of the gate, as a barrage of triples from Philly's backcourt forced Billy Donovan to call a quick timeout. Maxey was particularly devastating, splashing home four three-pointers in the opening period.
Donovan's adjustments were not enough to slow Philadelphia, which raced out to a 45-27 first-quarter lead behind its highest-scoring period of the season. Maxey remained on a heater into the second as the rest of the 76ers' offense stalled, helping to keep his team ahead by double-digits.
Chicago's improved defensive performance couldn't cut into the deficit before the break. Giddey did it all as the primary scorer and initiator for the Bulls, but Philadelphia still held a 75-56 lead at the half.
A third-quarter surge by the Bulls turned the blowout into a close game. Chicago ended the period on a 19-8 run, and the momentum pulled Donovan's squad within single digits of the 76ers as the game went down to the wire.
Vucevic tipped in a missed shot to make it a five-point game with 4:39 remaining, and a goaltending call on a fastbreak tightened Philly's slim lead to three. Giddey hit a floater with 1:11 on the clock to bring the score to 111-110.
With the chance to take the lead, Giddey turned the ball over, but found redemption on the ensuing possession with his game-winning assist to Vucevic.
