The Bulls are as close to full strength as they been all season, and they played like it. On Friday night, Chicago pulled out it's second-straight win against the Cleveland Cavaliers 136-125, a game in which Chicago wholeheartedly committed an up-tempo playstyle, and dominated the Cavaliers 20-7 in fastbreak points.
With Ayo Dosunmu returning to the fold for a Bulls team that also recently got top backup center Zach Collins back, we got one of our first true looks at Donovan's preferred rotation.
Dosunmu and Tre Jones were both on minutes restrictions, but even with that, interestingly, Patrick Williams was essentially left out of the rotation with five minutes played on the evening.
Williams' absence wasn't felt heavily, as the Bulls fairly new-look frontcourt rotation of Collins, Nikola Vucevic, and Jalen Smith held their own. These groupings, including the new double-big look--usually with Smith and one of Vucevic or Collins--allow Matas Buzelis to slide around between the SF and PF positions.
When playing the more perimeter-focused SF role, Buzelis seemingly has an easier time finding mismatches to attack decisively. This was a massive bounce back game for the second-year forward, who had not scored 20+ points in a game since December 1st. He finished the night with 24 points on 9-15 shooting, including 4-6 from the free throw line, finding a way to be efficient despite the 3-point shot not falling for him (2-8).
On defense, this new frontcourt group that Donovan has been running as of late has provided much more than usual for the Bulls in terms of rim protection.
In Friday night's win, Chicago collected five blocks, with Buzelis finishing with 2 steals and 2 blocks himself on the evening.
As a unit, the Bulls had 12 steals to go along with their five blocks. Chicago's defensive activity was noticeable, of course, made easier by the fact that Donovan Mitchell was out, but nonetheless Chicago turned Cleveland's mistakes into points often.
The Cavs finished the night with 15 turnovers and conceded 21 points to the Bulls off of those turnovers.
The Bulls weren't able to contain Darius Garland the way they did in Wednesday's win, but a big part of his production on Friday was simply a higher usage rate as a result of Mitchell's absence. Garland ended Friday night with 35 points on 27 FGAs, as opposed to 15 points on 16 FGAs on Wednesday.
As the Bulls prepare for Sunday's road matchup with the Atlanta Hawks, they can enjoy the fact that they pulled out a win in which White and Giddey essentially swapped roles, showcasing their versatility. White led the Bulls with nine assists on the evening.
Meanwhile, Giddey--who was second on the team with seven assists--led Chicago in 3-pointers made, knocking down 3-7 from deep, as he continues to show off his refined jump shot. The Bulls even got a bounce back Vucevic game on Friday, as the Montenegrin big man chipped in a team-leading 24 points without a single free throw attempt. Chicago got big scoring nights from three of their starters, dominated in fastbreak points (20-7), and collected 34 assists in Friday's win. Regardless of how healthy they are, continuing to focus on those areas stands as a great formula to to rack up the wins.
