Injuries derail the Bulls' season as Jaden Ivey and Jalen Smith are shut down.

The injury crisis that has haunted the Chicago Bulls from opening night through the final stretch continues its relentless assault. After the Bulls were brutally dismantled by the Philadelphia 76ers' offensive firepower on Wednesday night, injury updates delivered another devastating blow.

According to the team's medical update on Thursday, Jalen Smith, who reaggravated his right calf during Wednesday's game against Cleveland, will miss the remainder of the season. Jaden Ivey, who has been managing persistent left knee pain, will also miss the rest of the season and continue rehabilitation.

Smith left the court and was eventually ruled out at the Xfinity Mobile Arena during Wednesday night's contest. Per CHSN's report, head coach Billy Donovan said Smith was visibly upset and frustrated about reaggravating the injury that has plagued him all season. Despite posting his best statistical season as a Bull — averaging 10.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists while shooting 37.2% from three — his recurring calf issues have cost Smith 12 games this season and forced him into minutes restrictions on countless other occasions.

The loss of Smith represents a significant blow to Chicago's frontcourt, which has been desperately undersized all season. As a fringe starter who could start or come off the bench, his ability to stretch the floor, protect the rim and provide energy made him one of the Bulls' most reliable contributors. Smith had emerged as a crucial piece in Donovan's rotation, particularly after Zach Collins went down for the season with his own toe injury. Now, with both bigs sidelined, the Bulls face the season's final games with even more skeletal frontcourt depth.

Ivey's shutdown comes as less of a surprise but still carries implications. The guard has been out of action since February 11, when the Bulls lost to the Boston Celtics 124-105. Since joining Chicago at the trade deadline, Ivey has shown signs of improvement but has yet to find his rhythm, averaging 11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists across only four appearances. As Donovan admitted earlier, the former fifth pick of the 2022 NBA Draft was no longer in prime form after suffering a broken left fibula in 2025 with Detroit.

As Ivey enters restricted free agency this summer, the question of whether to re-sign him becomes a crucial discourse for the Bulls' front office. His injury history, diminished production and Chicago's already crowded backcourt make his retention unlikely.

With both players shut down, the Bulls limp toward the finish line of another lost season, their roster decimated by the same injury bug that's plagued them from day one.
