The Chicago Bulls swung and missed on former Warriors and Hawks forward Jonathan Kuminga, but may have a chance to sign him in the future.

The Chicago Bulls are in the market for another rotation piece before the start of the 2026-27 season, which begins on Oct. 21 against Darko Rajakovic and the Toronto Raptors.

The Bulls recently attempted to construct a sign-and-trade deal for former Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks forward Jonathan Kuminga this offseason before Kuminga signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

While the Bulls failed to accomplish their objective of landing Kuminga, coach Tiago Splitter and Executive VP of Basketball Operations Bryson Graham may get another chance to acquire the high-flying forward next summer, judging by comments shared over the weekend by his agent.

Kuminga Lands With Title Contender

Kuminga landed with Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, coach Chris Finch and the Timberwolves on a two-year free agent deal that will give him an opportunity to chase a championship for one season and a player option to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Kuminga's skills seem like an excellent fit for the Timberwolves, but they also appear tailor made for coach Splitter's movement-heavy, up-tempo system and young core of players including Matas Buzelis and rookie sensation Caleb Wilson.

Expect the Bulls to keep a close eye on Kuminga this season in Minnesota to monitor whether or not he might be a good fit for their franchise in the coming seasons, with the possible expectation of pursuing his services after the 2026-27 season concludes.

Turner Mentions Bulls in Interview

Kuminga's agent, Aaron Turner, mentioned the Bulls over the weekend in an interview with the Run It Back podcast, noting that Chicago is expected to have plenty of cap space next offseason that could make it an attractive destination for his client.

"Money coming before basketball is not how you continue to make more and more money," Turner said, defending his client's choice to pass up a long-term deal and take a shorter one with a player option.

"Next year is a way better free agency year for him...Teams that have been trying to sign-and-trade for him, like Sacramento and Chicago, will have a lot of money," Turner said according to Richard Pereira of The Big Lead.

Kuminga is 6-foot-7 and 225 pounds but plays bigger because of his world class leaping ability.

A threat on backdoor cuts and lobs, Kuminga seems like ideal fit to play alongside Bulls point guard Josh Giddey, whose game has grown by leaps and bounds since entering the NBA.

An offseason addition of Kuminga would give Chicago three of the most athletic forwards in the Eastern Conference along with Buzelis and Wilson, both of whom appear to be budding stars.

Kuminga will have a chance to prove his worth this season on what is likely to be the best team he's played on since the 2022 NBA champion Warriors.

The Bulls are seeking a return to championship contender status, and the addition of a player of Kuminga's caliber could be just what they need to make it a reality.
