The Bulls’ patient wait is over: Portland’s play-in win not only delivered Chicago a long-overdue first-rounder from the Lauri Markkanen trade, it may have also landed the franchise a rare offseason advantage — and a whole new level of intrigue.

Nearly five years after the Lauri Markkanen trade was made in 2021, the first-round pick owed to the Chicago Bulls will finally be executed. The Portland Trail Blazers' play-in victory over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night ensured they would be in the NBA playoffs, which was the condition listed for the pick to be conveyed.

The pick has long been protected through various conditions, but now finally unlocks one of the Bulls' most valuable assets. Chicago will enter this summer's NBA Draft with not just one, but two first-round selections, both of which will be in the top 15. This could be a huge boon in a draft class that many consider one of the top draft classes in recent memory.

For an organization in transition, the timing could not be better for the Bulls.

The Bulls' front office is currently without it's important roster decision makers after the team parted with executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley earlier this month. With two prime draft picks, and a roster that hovers between retooling and rebuilding, the Bulls might be an attractive spot for candidates.

In addition, Bulls head coach Billy Donovan will have to decide whether his future is still aligned with the organization. Billy's future has been up in the air ever since the North Carolina head coaching job was made available a month ago, and while that job was ultimately given to former NBA coach Mike Malone, that has not stopped whispers and speculations on whether Billy thinks it might be time to move on.

The pick from Portland was originally acquired in August 2021, when the Bulls sent forward Lauri Markkanen to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a three-team deal that also involved Portland. The Trail Blazers' first-rounder was heavily protected for several years, carrying over season after season when Portland narrowly finished below the required threshold for conveyance. That changed Tuesday night, when the Blazers’ play-in win mathematically guaranteed their draft positioning would meet the pick’s final protection terms. The result sent a ripple through the Bulls’ fandom, which had waited nearly half a decade to see the asset finally come through

It is also notable that the Bulls are looking to have a substantial amount of cap space this summer as well, which will give the power to whoever is hired to reshape the roster quickly in their vision. With ample draft picks combined with cap space, the team can be a destination spot for talent when free agency opens up.

Leading up to the draft, there will be plenty of speculation on whether the Bulls should try to continue building guard depth or find a big man cornerstone for their roster, but with the results on Tuesday night, they can potentially try to get both.

For the many fans who have waited patiently through injuries, roster rebuilds, and playoff near-misses, Tuesday night's result might feel like one of the most consequential moments this decade. One that, starting with their hires at the top, could lead to one of the most pivotal summers to define the next era of Chicago Bulls basketball.
